    Fuel Delivery... I think

    Hi,

I have a stock 2000 GT Auto and after I drive it around for about an hour itll start surging forward and dying on me if I try to accelerate at all.  I took it to a shop, they hooked up ther code reader to it and drove it around.  When they got it warm and tried to accelerate it would die at like 3500 rpm.  It wasnt spitting any codes but the fuel pressure was dropping to 18 psi.  They said they werent sure exactly what it could be (they work on Vettes and Camaros).  They said if they had to guess theyd call a pump, but I dont want to drop $200 on a guess.  Obviously its hard to diagnose without seeing it but any ideas?  Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not too good with these kinds of problems, but maybe you need a fuel pressure regulator?

From what you have described it does point towards a fuel pump that is going out.  I've had them do that to me before and I've also had pumps just up and quit on me without any warning.  If you plan on modifying your car later on chances are you'll need a larger pump anyways so you could just think of it as laying the ground work for future modifications.

From what I understand the pressure regulator is built in to the pump, dont know if thats right but a number of mustang guys have told me that.  Either way, i was trying to make sure it couldnt be something like the MAF, throttle postion switch, or idle air control valve.  It only seems to do it when its warm so I feel like its the pump just overheating and quitting on me I just want to make sure.

Im not going to do too much to this mustang, its the daily driver, got a magnaflow offroad x-pipe and magnaflow catback, k&n intake... Ill probly get a new throttle body and intake manifold and probly be about it.  Im on the hunt for a Comp. Orange Mach I to play with.

While faulty pumps do exhibit the same symptoms, 99-up cars also have issues witht he fuel rail pressure sensor.  The rail pressure sensor is what tells the computer to increase or decrease fuel supply via the pump.
