First off I would really like someone to show me a big enough gain in horse power to negate them removing the emission control off a vehicle, and where it's actually cost effective, in the sence of having to get a phoney state inspection at an extra cost and the time is take to find that certian someone that'll do it, plus all the other risks involved.
With this said let's look at the EGR system:
The EGR system is used for lowering the NOx formed during combustion. In the presence of sunlight, NOx reacts with hydrocarbons in the atmosphere to form ozone (O3) other wise know as a photochemical smog.
The EGR system does not operate during ,idle, cold start-up, and WOT, and only small amounts of exhaust are all that's needed to lower peak combustion temps.
Operation the EGR at WOT would reduce engine performance, in addidtion to lowering NOx, the EGR system helps control detonation, using an EGR system allows for greater ignition timing advance sooner without detonation.
Now for your smog pump, or primary and secondary air injection systems:
The air pump provides air necessary for the oxidation process inside the catalytic converter.
During cold start-up the air is pumped to the back of the heads to help provide enough oxygen to convert hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide to water (H2O), when the engine goes to closed loop and is warmed to operating tempature, the air is diverted from the heads to the converters to help oxidize HC, CO, into H2O and CO2.
Under rapid deceleration and the vacuum rises above the normal idle level, air is diverted back into the air intake system to silence the air incoming, and keep the engine from backfiring.
Probably the most loss in horse power from this system would be a maximum of 6-7HP, if that is such a huge loss for a cleaner/better running and performing car, than you might want to try adding a K&N filter to offset the loss in power, or try some under drive pulleys.
But untill someone brings me some hard evidence that it's that much of a power robber, and harms that much performance, to wade around to all the underground service shops and pay 3 times the amount for my state inspection sticker, I'll drive mine green and with peace of mind and more dollars in my pocket.
Thank You LRS for providing me with replacement smog parts for my Fox body!
