Make your Boss 302 sound like it's the Boss!

2012 Mustang BOSS 302

I think we can all agree that Ford hit a homerun with the new 2012 Boss 302 Mustang. Between its looks and performance, there is virtually nothing else on the road that can compete with it in its price margain. One of LRS's good friends and customers recently purchased one for his stable. Although he was amazed with its performance, he wanted this car to sound like it's ready to be the Boss of the road. Granted these cars sound pretty good stock, and unbelievably sick with their baffles removed from the racing side pipes, he wanted something that was legal on the streets and wouldn't have him sitting in front of a patrol car on the side of the road everywhere he went. When he approached us about this, we knew exactly what needed to be done. Ford Racing offers their Sport Axle-back Exhaust Kit M5230MGTLA for the 2011-12 Mustang GT 5.0's and this is also a direct bolt on for the Boss 302. Ford went through alot of research with this kit and it gives a classic aggressive sound, while making sure not to induce an ambundance of sound resonance into the cabin. Its stainless design with 4'' polished tips definitely look the part too and will last a long time.

Installing an axleback is a quick and easy way to dramatically change the personality of your Mustang. We started the install by jacking up the rear of the car and securing with jack stands. Once we were able to access the stock mufflers, we loosened the clamp on each muffler, then removed the bolts securing the muffler hanger brackets to the car. With these removed, the muffler will come right down into your hands. Once off the car, you can see the dramatic difference between the stock muffler on the left versus the new sport muffler on the right. There is a significant difference in weight between the two as well.

You will now need to transfer the muffler hanger brackets over to the new mufflers by simply sliding them onto the posts. Once this is done, you will need to reuse your original mufflers clamps. These clamps are spot welded to a thin metal tab on the original muffler. All you need to do is bend it back and forth and the tab will easily break allowing the clamps to seperate. Simply transfer them to the new mufflers and the install is the reverse of the removal.

Once you have your mufflers installed, line the tips up and tighten the clamps down and you are done! Time to enjoy your new axleback!

As you can see, this made a huge cosmetic improvement over stock and this Boss now has a bark as loud as its bite! Check out the before and after sound clip below.

Sounds great. At fordracingparts.com they list the 2011-2012 Mustang GT/GT500 Ford Racing Sport Axle-Back Exhaust Kit, M-5230-Msvtla as an upgrade for the 2011 - 2012 Ford Mustang V6. Do you know if this muffler will fit the V6 car. I think the piping for the V6 is 2.5 inches and the GT is 2.75 inches but I am not sure.
