Latemodel Restoration Part Number SLP-M50025
By John Canfield
There have been several inexpensive blackout panels that have been introduced for the 2010-2012 Mustangs from decals and magnetics to hard plastic covers. Late Model Mustang Restoration is now offering a new Rear Blackout Panel from SLP. SLP stands for “Street Legal Performance”. The company was founded by speed and performance part innovator Ed Hamburger in 1986. Since its inception, SLP had been a mainstay for GM performance enthusiasts. Recently, SLP decided to enter the Mustang performance market with their selection of superchargers, "loudmouth" exhausts, brake controller, and of course the rear blackout panel that I installed on my 2011 Mustang.
My First Impressions:
The SLP Mustang Blackout Panel (SLP-M50025) comes neatly packed with everything you need to perform a professional installation. The box is packed with the blackout panel, double sided tape, 3M Adhesion Promoter, and installation instructions. The panel is well made, and fits the Mustang with OEM precision. Installation is a snap with the well written instructions, and the 3M supplied products.
Installation:
First, thoroughly clean the new panel:

Next, apply the included 3M Adhesion Promoter to the area where the double sided tape will be applied.

Next, clean the rear trunk area where the panel is to be placed. Make sure to remove all
accumulated wax with soap and water.

Take the second packet of 3M Adhesion Promoter and apply it to the area where the double sided tape adheres to the trunk.

Place the double sided tape to the panel. Remember to allow the adhesion promoter to sit for at least 5 minutes.

Before removing the tape backing, place the panel on the trunk to insure a proper fit. Finally, remove the tape backing and place on the trunk area. Hold the various sections for 10 seconds for a snug fit. You may be wondering about the Faux gas cap on the rear deckild. Don't worry, this SLP blackout applies over it for a great fit!

Final Impressions:
The SLP rear blackout panel gives the Mustang a very “pro” custom look while maintaining an OEM like appearance. The color of the panel is a “spot on” match with the rear OEM bumper valance. At a retail price point of $49.99, Latemodel Restoration offers this 2010, 2011, 2012 Mustang rear blackout panel for much less than other similar products. Made in America is always a plus, also. It is also nice to see that SLP is finally turning from the “darkside” and embracing the true American Pony Car!
