New Ford Mustang front

A big slice of America is crossing the Atlantic: the Mustang is heading to UK showrooms, Auto Express can reveal. To coincide with the musclecar’s50th anniversary in 2014, Ford will launch it across the world, and in right-hand drive for the first time.

Sources have revealed that dealers are being told to prepare for its arrival. The newcomer will sit at the top of the range alongside regular models such as theFiestaandFocusin dealerships. It will be the most European-friendly version of the coupé ever – but will still be a proper Mustang, with V8s for the fastest models.

The company’s ‘One Ford’ strategy is behind the Mustang’s migration. To cut costs and reduce the number of models (and platforms) the firm makes globally, the all-new model will be a ‘world car’, sold in different markets virtually unchanged.

The Fiesta, Focus andMondeoalready follow this approach, and it means there is a business case for producing right-hand-drive Mustangs in the States and shipping them to Europe. But the UK won’t be the only right-hand-drive market the car is offered in; Australia and Japan will take the car, too.

An insider revealed:“The design studios in Europe and Australia are working on it, as well as those in America. It will be smaller and closer in spirit to the original 1964 Mustang.”

Our illustrations give you a good idea of how the new ‘pony’ car will look. It’s leaner and ever so slightly smaller, but still very mean, and packs all the visual aggression for which the legendary model has been famous. This includes recessed headlamps, a traditional C-pillar and triple lens tail-lights.

Yet while it harks back to Sixties Mustangs, the new car will be the most technically advanced version ever. It will be far lighter than the current model, for improved fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions.

Plus, for the first time, it’s set to feature independent rear suspension. As on the Chevrolet Camaro, this set-up replaces the decades-old live rear axle of the current car, and should mean better ride comfort and traction.

Power will come from a new 2.5-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost turbo with around 300bhp, while a range-topping 500bhp 5.4-litre V8 will be available, too. Six-speed manual andautotransmissions are likely to be offered with torque vectoring to keep the performance in check, while the handling is expected to be tuned by Jost Capito and his team at Ford’s Global Performance Vehicles arm.

As well as upping quality under the skin, Ford will have to pay attention to the materials used inside – current models fall behind their European rivals in terms of fit and finish. The move to make the Mustang a world car will be controversial.

Bosses will need to tread carefully so as not to alienate the model’s huge fan base – nearly 75,000 examples were sold in the US in 2010 – and still appeal to discerning UK buyers used to the BMW 3-Series Coupé and Audi A5.

But with Vauxhall’s VXR8, and the Monaro before it, proving that there’s room for powerful muscle cars in the line-up of a mainstream maker, Ford will be confident of success.

As a life long "Mustanger" I'm thrilled to see the mustang being considered for the world market, however, I hope the appearance of the 2014 Mustangs sticks closer to the current models. To me, the initial design sketches for the 2014 looks way too much like the Camaro, which would defenetly hold me back from purchacing one.

The engine line-up sounds quite interesting but I do agree the intial sketch here looks very Camaro esq, which may hold me back from getting one since i am going to be in the market for a new car around that time.  Please no gun slot windows and hideous gauge cluster like the camaro or its a definite no..

Looks way too much like the Camaro..come on Ford, you can do much better!!...I have owned 6 foxbodies and still think they were the best body design, not too big and bulky, but not too small either..Where's the retro fox??

It looks like a Chevy product with the double grill like the impala malibu camaro and all of their suv vehicles. Ford needs to do a remake of the fox body mustangs and give us a choice if hatch back or notch.

the styling is a little questionable but with a few tweeks i think it could almost look like a 71-73 Mach1 so i think ford should make a ecoboost Mach1 along with the other engines like back in the day were one model of car could be had with multiple engines.

I have owned 4 mustangs ... 2 Fox and 2 SN95 cars.  I like the idea of the "SVO" version, but there is no mention of the current engine line up.  The 3.7 is an amazing engine producing over 300hp and still capable of 30+MPG.  The 5.0 is the greatest engine to date.  It is capable of producing more power than the current 5.4 that's in the GT500.  www.mustang50magazine.com/.../index.html

I hope that the 5.4 they are talking about is an iteration of the coyote platform.

It looks like a mustang only in the grill and headlights. The middle looks like a camaro, and at the rear it looks like one of those rice-burner hyundai so-called sports cars. Very poor excuse for a mustang. The only thing that excites me is the power plants.

just wish make them less bulky. they go for the retro look but to me, the only "retro" looking car is the challenger. They need to work a little harder if they still want that retro look... My opinion, the should sink in the tail lights. I'm not crazy about the '11s&'12s. No offence intended. I like the 05s-10s better.

Thats a nice article 94GT, but there is no way that 5.0 doesn't have upgraded internals. An 11 to 1 hyper piston motor would explode at that boost and hp. I think that rendering is ugly. A redo of the fox with the coyote motor would be so sweet!

I love the idea of the mustang being a "world car" and the fact that there will be an even better economic engine available, spreading out to an even broader range of people, BUT I agree 100% with the people above! Dont try to make the mustang something it's not! Ford you are better then that! if you do this then you will loose a lot of respect. KEEP THE MUSTANG ORIGINAL!!!

I don't think it's gonna look like that at all... That's a picture that someone outside of ford made I bet, you can tell it's like a camaro , the mustang will prob. Be cross between 2010-2013 mustang and the fox body. Let's not forget that it's gonna be smaller and lighter just like the fox body... But that's just what I think

In case you guys haven't noticed, none of these rumors are ever true. The rumors are wild, and then we get something a little more tame and for the masses.

Car looks exactly like the Giugiaro Mustang Concept (search Google images) that's been in Motortrend with only slight mod's to the front end but more specific ones in the rear.

Even though it is looking like a Camaro, it does look better than one.  As with the 2005, 2011's when seeing the concepts/production photos for the first few times I didnt care for them but after seeing them in person with some customizations I love them.  This model im sure will be no different.

Can't wait to see it in Boss & GT500 trim!!

As the owner of a 2010 Shelby GT500, I sure hope they move up to the supercharged/turbocharges 5.0 engine.  While the 5.4 is a great engine, the 5.0 is much smoother.  As for IRS, I don't care one way or the other.  Look what Ford has done with the solid rear axle now.  Handles better than the IRS equiped Camaro.  Just can't wait to see the spy photo's start flying around the net.

I love the look of that concept, and hope Ford sticks with something similar. About time they made the Mustang "world-class". Give it that lightweight IRS, take some weight off the body, and keep a healthy V8 in the line-up. Main thing though; give it a manual gearbox that's refined. My Toyota truck has a better shifting box than the old Tremec.
