Ford Bringing Back the turbo 4 SVO Mustang soon?

Share |

1986 50Resto SVO

Mustang fans of a certain age will likely remember fondly the SVO model, which was powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder. Well, our sources say that turbo four-cylinder power might be once again in the future plans for the 'Stang.

We already know that an EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder that displaces 2.0 liters will be going into the upcoming 2013 Ford Taurus and other models, and now we're hearing that a 2.3-liter version of that same engine--with a different cylinder head configuration--will be going into the Mustang (it will also be used for Lincoln platforms) around 2015.

Ford is also working on a 2.7-liter turbocharged V-6, according to our source, and that engine will be used in both front-wheel and rear-wheel drive cars. That means it's a likely candidate for duty in the Mustang, the Edge crossover SUV, and perhaps the Fusion sedan. It's also possible that this engine could be used for a Ford Racnger replacement, should Ford choose to build one. Again, the target date here is 2015.

Fear not, V-8 fans, as the 5.0-liter Coyote that currently powers the Mustang GT does not appear to be going anywhere soon. However, it might receive direct-injection technology, which could improve fuel economy. A source indicates thatFord has also studied turbocharging its V-8s, but nothing has been approved for possible production.

A fleet of Mustangs offering three engines? That could be what Ford has on tap for 2015. Stay tuned.

This would be very exciting if this did happen, I won't hold my breath, but I will keep my eyes and ears open for further updates.

Would also be nice if the campaigned this future platform in the SCCA show room stock class if they did produce it.

The current mustang is so heavy, a 4cyl. turbo wouldn't be a very good canidate. It would take some weight loss to make it a fun car.

i'm an SVO owner, and it would be hard for me to be excited about a new SVO. Part of why the SVO is appealing is because many haven't heard of them, or haven't ever seen one. It wasn't meant to be a limited production car. Only happened that way because of bad marketing by Ford. (Selling them at Lincoln/Mercury dealers!?)

Maybe a twin turbo V6 would be more realistic.

I kinda like the resurrection of the SVO brand. Being the owner of an 86 2R, I would think it would bring our current Fox SVO's into the spotlight. Unless you a "car guy" or an 80's car buff, no one really has ever heard of an SVO let alone seen one goin down the road or parked somewhere.  Die hard V8 guys loath it and that's fine with me. I love drivin the thing. Cars speed up to see what just passed them then honk the horn with a thumbs up.

My only hope is that it MEETS the standard of which the Fox SVO was designed for and not just raped for it's badge. Oh, and still have the offset hoodscoop and bi-wing spoiler.

As David says, it wold have to diet down quite a bit. Maybe an SCCA style "Comp. Prep" model.

Ford engineers were onto something before they killed the SVO with a DOHC design pushing 275hp....for 1987. (Silmilar to the Volvo head transplant.)  If it takes two turbocharges and two more cylinders...then do it. But make it worthy!!

Dan, be careful talking about taking parts from SVO's and putting them on a regular Mustang. They might hear you...... If you happened upon a wrecked SVO, Thunderbird Turbo Coupe or XR-7 you would be better off pulling the whole motor and swapping. It has been done and I'm sure you can find details on some of the larger Mustang forums.
