Mustang Clutch Kit Buyers Guide

What clutch do I need for my Mustang?  This is a question we are asked muliple times every day here at LRS.  What follows is the answer you've been looking for!  We'll start with mild & work our way up to wild in the 1979-present Mustang Clutch Kit Buyers Guide.


Stock Replacement Mustang Clutch Kits

If your Mustang is stock as a rock & you want a clutch that has the same pedal feel & manners as the one your Mustang came with from the factory, this line of clutches is for you.  These clutch kits are speced out to be a direct replacement for your OE unit & each kit includes the Pressure Plate, Friction Disc, Throw Out Bearing, & an alignment tool.  If you have some mods planned for your Mustang, stop reading here & move down to the next section.  These Mustang Clutch Kits are designed for use on completely stock cars on radial street tires.  The clutch disc is lined with an organic material & features a 10-spline hub that is compatible with the input shaft found on your SROD, T5, T45, & TR3650 manual transmissions.  It is always recommended to replace or re-surface your flywheel with the installation of a new clutch.  These clutch kits have a 12month/12,000 mile warranty!

The 2003-2004 Cobra & 2011-2012 Mustang GT had an upgraded clutch from the factory, so look at the RAM HDX for an entry level Clutch Kit for these street beasts.


SVE Mongoose Mustang Clutch Kit

Ford Racing was on to something good with the King Cobra Clutch Kit that ruled the Mustang Clutch Aftermarket for many years.  It was a solid upgrade for 1986-1995 Mustang 5.0L with a T5 & 1996-2000 Mustang GT with a T45.  But, like all good things, sometimes they come to an end.  Luckily we were able to pick up the slack with our SVE Mongoose Mustang Clutch Kit.  It is speced out just like the King Cobra Clutch & is a solid upgrade over stock.  It will handle up to 350 rear wheel horsepower on street radial tires.  The pedal feel is slightly firmer than stock, & some chatter may be evident on cars equipped with 2.73 gears.  The kit includes a Pressure Plate, Disc, Throw Out Bearing, Pilot Bearing, & Alignment Tool.  The Clutch Disc is organic lined & features a 10-spline hup compatible with the input shaft of your T5 or T45 manual transmission.  This clutch kit has a 30 day warranty!  It is always recommended to replace or re-surface your flywheel with the installation of a new clutch.  The use of an aluminum Quardrant with an adjustable clutch cable is highly recommened with this clutch kit.  Use of drag radials or drag slicks with this clutch will void the warranty!

RAM HDX Mustang Clutch Kit

The RAM HDX clutch is the creme de la creme of the performance Mustang street clutch market.  It's buttery smooth operation, medium pedal effort & 400 rwhp holding capability make it a force to be reconed with.  Some chatter may be evident on cars equipped with 2.73 gears.  Each Mustang Clutch Kit includes a higher clamp load pressure plate, 300 Series friction disc, Release Bearing, & an alignment tool.  (2005-2012 kits do not include release bearing or alignment tool)  The 300 series clutch disc is a premium organic lining that is bonded to a steel backing that allows for the highest rotational strength available along with better heat dissipation.  The 1986-2010 clutch discs feature a 10-spline hub that is compatible with the input shaft on your T5, T45, or TR3650 manual transmissions.  The 1986-2004 TKO option features a 26-splime hub compatible with the input shaft of the Tremec TKO series transmissions.  The 2011-2012 Mustang GT Clutch Kits feature a 23-spline hub that is compatible with the input shaft of the MT82 manual transmission.  These clutch kits have a 30 day warranty!  It is always recommended to replace or re-surface your flywheel with the installation of a new clutch.  On 1986-2004 Mustangs, the use of an aluminum Quardrant with an adjustable clutch cable is highly recommened with these clutch kits.  Use of drag radials or drag slicks with this clutch will void the warranty!

RAM Powergrip Mustang Clutch Kit

RAM Powergrip HD Mustang Clutch Kit

So, your Mustang sees regular drag strip duty wearing a pair of full on drag slicks.  Or, you simply have thrown the book at your engine & are now making up to 600 rear wheel horse power.  Maybe it's a combination of the two.  The RAM Powergrip HD is the benchmark all other single disc clutches are measured by.  The clutch disc is lined on both sides with RAM 900 seriec friction material. The 900 series friction material is comprised of a sintered iron construction & offeres a high coeficient of friction while still allowing for some slip for the clutch to engage smoothly. RAM Mustang Dual Disc Clutch Kit

For those that want to have their cake & eat it too, the RAM Dual Disc may be the answer.  They provide the ultimate in power handling while leaving the stock pedal feel intact, or only slightly heavier.  These Mustang Dual Disc Kits include a Billet Aluminum Flywheel, but do not include a release bearing or alignment tool.  On 1986-2004 Mustangs, the use of an aluminum Quardrant with an adjustable clutch cable is required with these clutch kits.  1986-2004 Mustangs will also require an adjustable pivot stud for the clutch fork.  Some 1999-2000 Mustang GT were equipped with 8 bolt flywheels.  Please check before ordering!  The RAM Mustang Dual Disc Clutches come in three varieties.

  • Force 9.5 - The RAM Force 9.5 is the ideal entry level Mustang Dual Disc Clutch for street use. With torque capacity to roughly 800-foot pounds and a moderate clamp pressure, it will handle small blower or turbo installations and provide a light pedal effort similar to the stock clutch. In fact, drivers of our 2011 Mustang test vehicle were not able to tell that the stock clutch was changed at all! The floater plate is driven from three sets of straps that eliminate any floater plate rattle at idle. The top clutch disc features a sprung hub assembly that absorbs the initial engagement of the clutch and reduces the chance of chatter on takeoff. This clutch is compatible with factory Mustang hydraulic release mechanisms.
  • Force 10.5 -  For higher horsepower Mustangs, the Force 10.5 dual disc is the natural choice. Based on the design of the original RAM Street Dual, Force 10.5 is more street friendly by using a three strap system to locate the floater plate. This eliminates floater plate ‘rattle’ that is common on stand driven dual disc clutches. A high clamp load pressure plate assures plenty of holding power without excessive pedal pressure. Steel backed 300 series facing mean smooth engagement on takeoff and insure long service life. For higher torque capacities, the Force 10.5N features the proven RAM 900 series metallic facings. Force 10.5 dual disc systems handle bigger torque loads and are a bit heavier than their smaller cousins. This higher inertia translates into better low speed driveability in heavier vehicles, or in large camshaft profile applications. If you are bolting on a larger blower or turbo system, Force 10.5 may be the best choice for you.
  • RTrack 10.5 - The RAM RTrack Dual is modeled after RAM's highly successful drag racing clutches used in high horsepower Pro Stock and Pro Modified applications. The major difference between these clutches and the Mustang Force 10.5 is the floater drive system. RTrack Dual uses a stand driven floater plate, which provides higher torque capacity and negative load capacity for Mustangs that see more use at the track. It uses a 2400 pound clamp load pressure plate for good holding power without excessive pedal effort, and features 300 series sprung hub top disc and solid hub bottom disc for smooth engagement. The RTrack 10.5N 900 series disc version is available for higher torque load applications, up to about 1300 foot pounds. Expect some floater plate noise at idle with this unit’s drive system. If you need the ultimate in holding power and durability for street or strip, the RTrack Dual is for you!
