2011 Mustang GT 5.0 Cosmetic Upgrades - RTR Wheels, GT500 Valance

Share |

I've been spending time adding performance upgrades to my 2011 Race Red Mustang GT, so I thought it was time to re-address the exterior.

I've you've followed my blogs, you know that I already had the 3D500, GT500 style, spoiler from 3d carbon, Roush 7-bar grille, and California Special front valance.  I've also lowered the car's stance with a set of Ford Racing M-5300-P, 1-inch lowering springs.

To further set the car apart from the crowd, I installed a set of RTR 19X9.5" wheels with Nitto 275/35/19 555 tires, a GT500 rear valance, and a custom, RTR-inspired stripe kit.

The install was simple, but the results are dramatic.  The rear valance is a factory Ford part, so the fit is perfect.  I completed the rear treatment, and added some paint protection, with a set of GT500 mud flaps.  The Nitto tires greatly improved responsiveness and traction over the stock Pirelli's, and filled up the fenders nicely.  The custom stripe kit (done by a local graphics shop.  Sorry, RTR won't release thier kit for resale) breaks up all that red.

Next, I'll be addressing my wheel hop issue, changing my exhaust up a bit, and detailing a complete nitrous installation with dyno and track results.  Stay tuned!

It has a very agressive stance. What are your tire and wheels sizes?

Scott, the car is coming along very well and looks awesome! If it would be in black, it would be almost a brother/sister to my 5.0, minus the RTR wheels. Still running the OEM Brembo wheels for right now, but seeing the RTR's installed on yours, I'm pretty much sold on them, as soon as the Pirelli's wear out.

I remember you installed lowering springs on yours as well... just to get a good feel, how much was yours lowered? 1" or 1.5"?

Thanks!

Scott, I really like the custom stripe treatment. The side stripe across the belt line reminds me somewhat of a 69 Camaro offering back in the day. It really accents the body lines and sets it apart. The hood stripe is also a nice touch. Whats next?

Never mind my question... just read the article again and noticed that you installed the FRPP 1" lowering springs. Sorry!

In comparison to the OE Brembo wheels, how far further do those RTR wheels/tires stick out of the wheel wells? Do you experience any rubbing with the 275's in the front during hard turns?

Thanks!

Ed,

I'm considering the boss front splitter and roush side splitters.

Andy,

The RTR wheels are flush with the fenders.  The original Brembo wheels were slightly under the fenders.  No rubbing at all.  I added an adjustable panhard bar when I did the RTR's.  They rear was slightly too far left with the factory bar.  It was hardly noticeable with the stock wheels, but, since the RTR's fill out the fenders more, it became a necessity.  I'll blog that this week, so you can get a better idea of the fender/tire relationship.

Looking great!  I think I'll be following closely in your footsteps with the CS front valence, GT500 wing and RTR wheels.  My car is performance white so I'm going for the black and white theme....debating on whether to paint the GT500 wing flat black or not......

Hello Scott,

I would like to get the 3D500, GT500 style, spoiler from 3d carbon for my 2011 GT also. However, my car came with the factory spoiler and I've heard that to put the 3D500 spoiler on the Mustang, it would have had to have come from the factory with the spoiler delete option because it basically ruins the existing decklid taking it off. I haven't looked into it myself yet but they are supposedly bolted AND 3M taped onto the decklid. What was the case with yours? Did you have the spoiler delete?

Thanks for your input.

my car came with the factory spoiler.  The spoiler will come off without damage, but it's not easy (I broke mine).  The factory spoiler is attached with bolts and double-sided tape.  Good news, though, is that there's no drilling required if you're removing a factory spoiler.  Spoiler delete cars will require drilling.
