1983-00 Mustang Econoshift T5 Shifter Install

Share |

One of the first things I do when I buy a Mustang is change out the stock shifter for an aftermarket replacement. In my '89 Mustang I have already swapped an aftermarket shifter in, but I thought I'd give our new economy short throw shifter a try. Swapping in an aftermarket shifter makes the driving experience for a 5 speed car much more enjoyable. Follow along as I show you step by step how to install our econoshift T5/T45 shifter.

First you'll want to unscrew your shift knob.

Then you'll need to remove the shifter bezel/boot assembly. Just pull up on the bezel and the clips will pop the bezel out.

Next you'll grab a 1/2" socket and take the shifter handle off.

Then you'll need to remove the four bolts that hold the lower shift boot on. If yours is missing or torn up now would be a great time to change it out. You can find replacements here.

Once you get the boot out of the way you can remove the four 1/2" bolts that hold the shifter to the transmission.

After you remove the bolts you may need a prybar to persuade the shifter to detache itself from the transmission after being on for so long.

Anytime you are replacing the shifter it is highly recommended to change the dampener bushing.

Now grab your new shifter.

Install the shifter and secure it with the four bolts, then put your lower shift boot back on. This shifter has an option to put the handle at a lower position, so I opted to relocate the handle to the lowest level pictured below.

Now all you need to do is install the shifter bezel and boot assembly, then screw your shift knob back on and you're ready to row through the gears in your new shifter! You'll wonder how you went this long with the stock shifter assembly after installing our new Econoshift short throw shifter.

did you need to make any adjustments to limit the shifter? Nuts  shown front and rear

on the pic where you are holding the shifter.

@Bryan: The shifter actually feels pretty smooth. Definitely an upgrade over the factory shifter that was on it when I first got the car. It seems comparable to the Tri-Ax that I removed to put this one on.

@Mat: I didn't make any adjustments to mine, but I know there are some out there that will most likely want to make some adjustments. All just a matter of personal preference.

I'm curious as to how you like the new shifter too. I've been trying to decide to spend the money on a tri-ax or pro 5.0. I want to upgrade from the stock shifter. I've got a 93lx completely stock engine. Not racing the car or anything just my daily driver. Once you get a feel for it let me know how you like it?.. Pros and Cons? Good buy? If its comparable to the tri-ax which im sure is built with more quality materials but for half the price. Seems like a good buy. Let me know your thoughts on it. thanks again

I'll be driving the car more this weekend to get a better idea and I'll post back.

We had a walk in customer come in yesterday that bought the shifter about a week ago and he said he was surprised how much he liked it for how cheap the price was.

After driving the car more this weekend I really like this shifter. I was planning on taking out the tri-ax to put in a Pro 5.0, but I think I'll stick with this one for a while. I think I may go back and do a little adjusting, but overall I really like it.

Completely unrelated, but I see you installed an aftermarket cd player without an install kit. I've been wanting to do this, but refuse to drill holes in my consol. How did you do it? It looks like you got a cd player that fit inside a radio case? Ant tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

will the 1987-93 Mustang Hurst 5 Speed Shift Handle & Bezel Kit

be compatible with the econo shifter?

thanks

Lee said:

@Matt: That CD player was already installed in the car when I bought it so I'm not sure what modifications (if any) were required to install it. When the money allows it I will be replacing it with something different that has a cleaner look to it. You can see the casing right now and it doesn't look very good to me.

@Hector: The Hurst handle/bezel kit will not work with this shifter.

@Byronn: Are you referring to the screws that limit how far forward and back the shifter goes?

Byronn said:

Yes sir. How are those set?

@Byronn: I have not touched them. I have them in the out of the box setting. When I get some extra time I may go back and do a little adjusting, but they are fine for now.

@Matt: No problem!

Lee thanks for posting the blog, it was very helpfull in installing my shifter. It most deffinetly is an improvement from stock, the shifting is much more smooth than it was before.

And if I may comment to Matt, I have a '99 gt and just last weekend installed and after market JVC cd player the only thing I needed was the wiring harness I did not have to cut anything or make any new holes now I am just waiting on my compartment kit for where the cd player portion was...

Lee said:

Shift knobs that have the stock thread pattern are compatible with this shifter, so far the only boot we've tried is the stock leather boot.
