With Ford using many different transmissions over the years, some people are unsure of the transmission in their own Mustang. Some people out there may say that's hard to believe, but its true. This Mustang Transmission blog will help shed a little light on to how you can confirm the transmission in your Mustang and help in your purchase of new Mustang Clutches and Mustang Shifters.
First and foremost you can probably find your transmission type on the door tag located on the inside of your driver's side door. Here is a picture out of our '95 Cobra R to give you an idea of what to look for.....

As you can see there is a ton of info on this tag, everything from manufacturing date to what interior trim package you have. If you look in the right hand lower corner you can see a section label TR at the top, you can see where i'm headed with this, it stands for transmission. Underneath the TR there will be a 5 alpha-numberic code that will tell you your transmission model.
This 5 digit code can start with a few different numbers or letters. Here is a short list of what they may start with and what that info means to you.......
If your code starts with a 2 or a 5 like our example picture shows, you have a T-5 5-speed transmission. This will be the most common in year models from 1983-1995 Mustangs, this will also include V6 Mustangs from 1994-2004 and 4 cylinder Mustangs from 1983-93. Also 2005-2010 Mustang V6's have a T-5 tranmission, but the shifter and clutch configuration are different from the earlier years models, so pay close attention to the year model when selecting parts.
If your code starts with a 6, you have a T-45 5-speed transmission. This is commonly found in the 1996-2000 and some early 2001 model Mustangs. Most of the parts such as clutches and shifter will interchange from the T-5 transmission to be compatible with the T-45 trans.
If your code starts with a K, you have a TR-3650 5-speed transmission. This transmission is made by Tremec and used in the Ford facotry production model Mustangs such as the 2001-04 Mustang GT, 2003-04 Mach 1, and 2001 Cobra. The TR-3650 is also used in the 2005-2010 Mustang GT, but the shifter configuration is much different compared to older models, once again you must pay attention to your year model Mustang when ordering parts.
Now, we left out three transmissions from our list of codes, mainly due to the fact they were only availble in certain cars. The first up is the famous T-56 6-speed transmission, this transmission was only put in the 2003-04 Cobra and the 2000 Cobra R. This isnt one you can easily mistake as there are not many 6-speed Mustangs around unless it was some type of retro-fit swap. Most shifters will specifally list they are for the T-56 transmission without listing year models, so pay close attention to that.
The second is the TR-6060 6-speed transmission. This transmission will be found in your 2007-11 Mustang Shelby GT500. This is a little higher performance model transmission and came equipped on the Shelby to make sure all the tire shredding power makes it to the ground. Parts for the Shelby are generally specific to what they fit so there shouldnt be much confusion on this one.
The third and final transmission we will mention is the MT82 6-speed transmssion. This transmission is what is behind the new 5.0L Coyote powerplant in the new 2011 Mustang. These transmissions are one to themselves and offer a lot of great advantages right out of the box. Parts for this transmission are also very specifically listed as they only fit one application and one year model so far. The 2011 V6 Mustang uses the same transmission as the 2011 GT 5.0L but the shifter is different.
With all the different transmssion applications and transformations going on out there, knowing this info is key to getting the right parts for your Mustang.
