2011 Mustang GT 5.0 Clutch Problem

Share |

Well, we're down for the count.  My 2011 Mustang GT 5.0's clutch is cashed after 1500 miles.  I haven't been easy on it, to say the least.  If you've been looking for new blogs on the car, they're coming, but I've got to get it back from the dealer first.

2005+ Mustang Steeda Rear Swaybar Relocation Bracket Installation

Others have experienced similar troubles.  A few 2011 5.0 owners have seen their clutch pedal "sticking" to the floor at higher RPM's.  Most have named the 5.0's revise clutch pedal assembly as the culprit. Mine is releasing on the floor, making it nearly impossible to get the car in gear.  I can pump the clutch and it seems to improve, but it's not right.

I could figure it out myself, but, since the car is under warranty, I'm trusting in my local Ford dealer to fix it.  I will let you know how it plays out.

For now, I'm stuck without my new car for a few days, but when I get it back, I'll report on the Steeda cold air kit I installed just before the clutch conundrum.

Stay tuned!

First gear in my trans seems to be very notchy and third gear has a slight grind feel to it sometimes .... is there any clutch adjustment on these new 5.0's or is it set with hydraulics?

That sucks. Been looking forward to the Steeda review. Seen a dyno that it gained 12rwhp and 10rwtq on top of a tune.

I guess it's expected on a brand new 5.0L engine for the 2011 Mustang.  Hopefully Ford can fix problem, having a reliable clutch is important when it comes to racing.

Seems as though I've been having the same problem. I was just about to take it in tomorrow and now I am absolutely going to take it in. I'm at 4000km (about 2500 miles) and I noticed the pedal suddenly became notchy and stuck halfway up on shifts, sometimes requiring me to get my foot under it and lift it manually. At first I checked with the car off, and I wondered if it was just the spring mechanism. That was until I downshifted under braking today when a cyclist left the sidewalk and rode into the lane I was driving. I felt the clutch sink straight and stick to the floor on the down shift momentarily. Shocked the hell out of me. I wouldn't say I've been especially aggressive with mine, but with car #53 off the line, hopefully this was an 'early' glitch and not something that will plague all 5.0L owners. I'm upset that I have to take the car in for something already. I remember my Dad's '05 and working at a Ford dealership when they first came out and all the problems they had with the fuel sending units. I was hoping that this time something like that wouldn't come up. For your sake, Scott, I hope they perform everything under warranty as it should be, and I hope that for my sake as well.

Sorry to hear it fellas. Are there any problems being noticed with the clutch in the V6 engine or is just with the 5.0 L engines?

Interesting. My 2010 4.6L is on it's fourth clutch. Ford passed the blame on to me. So watch out! If you haven't been driving that thing any faster than an old woman does in the fog, be prepared for Ford Customer "Service" to cut you off. Cost to me is $7,000 so far.

Do the 2011 5.0 and V6 engines share the same clutch?

You would think that they would have no prob wanting to help out with the clutch issue, and not just attribute it (right away) to customer's abuse of vehicle. I guess the '05's and up had the hydraulic clutch?

I had a problem with my clutch pedal losing pressure and not being able to disengage even with the clutch pedal pressed all the way to the floor.

The service adviser told me that the clutch fluid was contaminated which caused the slave cylinder to fail.

The symptoms are close to that of a corvette, where clutch dust would coat the slave cylinder and contaminate the fluid over a short time. However I hope this is not the case and rather just a bad batch of mustangs from Ford.

i just got my 2011 GT about two weeks ago and with only 525 miles on it i am already experiencing clutch issues. Its seems in my case that when i go to shift form 1st to 2nd, even though the clutch is to the floor i feel a grind and 2nd to 3rd is the same as if the clutch is releasing. Anyone else having this issue? It's gonna be like a week or two before i can get it for service :(

Hate to tell you guys this but mine went out at 2600 miles 4 weeks ago and i am finely getting her back today. I requested Ford not to install the same clutch as before so I have a new dual ceramic high performance clutch that they said really grabs hard and also shifts just as smooth as the last. Center Force will have one very shortly I have talked to Larry Clark with Midway performance out in Arizona their prototype is ready for production. Also you who have 5.0's already only run high octane gas in them and you that are going to order one tell the dealer do not put fuel in it do it yourself. This small tidbit will give you 25hp&25lbs of tourqe right off the bat. The computer in the stang will take 30 days to program itself to your driving needs so if you drive like me stomp it everyday! At 160 mph it is incredibly smooth and I have smoked everything that dared so far.

The link wwroller gave above also links to a Ford TSB. My 2011 GT clutch has to be mashed to the floor in order to shift smooth, and the transmission is really notchy shifting. REALLY notchy, like, GRINDY even. I don't like it and have a date at the dealer tomorrow. They owe me a couple promises which they seem to be keeping. I asked them to raise the clutch action and they looked at each other like I just ate their mother's cookies. Will update you again later - Dave in AZ.

P.S. In my past experience, if you mention a TSB to the Ford dealer, they react positively.

Our 2011 GT/CS auto trans also has a mind of it's own. Can't decide which gear to be in at low speeds and hesitates/slips when starting from stop at times. Taking it in soon. Also, stabbed it hard hte other day when a light turned yellow while entering an intersection. Upon letting off the throttle I felt a hard SLAM for a second like wheel lock up. The engine may have died for a second cuz it was like slamming on the brakes & I was not touching them. It also hesitates for a moment when stabbing the throttle. One would think Ford tested these things well in pre-production form. The '09 Bullitt we have... no problems.

Sorry I didn't get back right away. Since my clutch is not actually doing anything wrong at this time, the dealer wasn't going to "fix" it, because there is no TSB. If there was a TSB, the dealer told me they would be happy to replace the clutch.

BUT...the nice fella in the service department disabled that annoying skip shift for me, because he said that was probably the thing that was causing the chattering coming out of first gear.

Much better now. My 2011 GT has 2000 miles on it and screams. I love it.

BTW...No options, no sync, no electric seats, no NOTHING. Just a 5.0 and a place to sit behind it and go for a ride!!!

Me again Ford has my car going on three weeks and they finally figured it out (the engineers) that is. They installed another clutch SVT this time and a new svt brake assembley . They said that the brake pedal on the other side of the fire wall was interferring with the clutch pedal and was keeping pressure on it which would not fully disengauge the clutch. I get it back Monday and it's off to the track.
