1983-1993 Mustang Inner Door Handle Install

Share |

One of the most used parts of your foxbody Mustang is the inner door handle. After 20+ years of use the spring is pretty worn out and can make it a pain to open the door or can even break when going to open the door. At $9.99 a piece they are very affordable and very easy to install.

You'll want to start by removing the door panel. If you're like me and need to replace both the inner and outer handles you can take a look at this blog that will have the step by step on removing the door panels as well as replacing the outer door handles. You can see this blog by clicking here. 1979-1993 Outer Door Handle Install

Once you get the door panel off this is what you should see.

There will be one phillips head screw holding it into place that you'll need to take off.

Once you remove the screw you'll need to tap it with something towards the inside of the car to remove it from the channel it sits in. After that you'll see the lock rod that is in the tab. Turn the door handle so that you can remove the rod from the tab.

Here is the old door handle compared to the new door handle.

Slide the rod back onto the new door handle's tab and then push the handle back into the channel it sits in.

That's it and you're done!  Now it's time to put everything back together.   This would be the perfect time to replace any broken door panel push pins, door handle bezels, missing door panel moisture vapor barriers, sound deadener, and especially door lock actuators.

Now step back and look at your finished project!

Great Job Lee, and if the power window motors are original, this would be grat time to do them too.

You could call it a LRS Complete Door Overhaul ;)

I've owned a 1984 GT "T" Tops HO since 1985. I've replaced the engine and transmission to a C-6 auto. The suspension is setup for left and right turns. The frame has been stiffened and the cooling system has been increased by 30%. The trouble I have is the T top weather stripping still leaks and  I can't find speedo gauges that are digital. I need quickly the  rubber water sealers for the outside of both door windows. No one seems to carry them even Sacramento Mustang. How do I find more smaller parts for the '84 T Top GT with a 347 CI Hutchinson speed machine. It was a Roush 342 R but after two engines that failed and Roush would not take care of the second complete engine. After 8000 miles it started using oil and by the time it failed at 16000 miles it was using a quart of synthetic 10/30 every 450 miles. Then the valve spring broke causing the engine to be torn down where the cam, lifters, rocker arms, etc were scored due to the wrong weight springs. Bill McCanally Nascar Racing sent the engine to Rex Hutchinson Speed Shop in Sacramento CA for the rebuild after Roush refused to rebuild unless I paid. Rex built an engine that operates much better than the Roush. I'm taking the Roush stickers off and replacing with BMR Nascar Racing and Rex/Racing Engines. Make up your own mind about the Customer Relations that Roush has. No matter how much scoring and damage at such an early mileage they only said it was out of the 2 year warranty and that's that.
