1988 Mustang GT Convertible aka Project IntroVert

Share |

Latemodel Restoration Supply has had several project cars in the past.  From a black 1990 454 SS Chevrolet Pickup to an orange 2008 SRT8 Challenger, we've had a great sampling of cars that appeal to our customers.   Although we offer parts for 1988-Current Chevy trucks, 1994-Current Dodge Rams and Challengers and even the 2010 Camaro, our first love is the Fox-body Mustang.

Our love and dedication to 1979-2011 Mustangs are what has got us here, and will carry us into the future as the leaders in Mustang restoration and performance parts.  Our stable includes a race-ready 2000 Cobra R, a 1995 Cobra R, a 1979 Mustang Pace Car, and a clean, vibrant red 1993 Cobra (you know, the one we tried to raffle last year?), but those are all really nice and do not need anything.

What we don't have, is a convertible.  Nor do we have a driving, unrestored car that we can throw parts at as-needed.  We have plenty of employees with Mustangs but they are all coupes and hatchbacks.  Often the 1983-1993 Mustang Convertibles are loved by their owners but not by many others.  Fox body Mustang convertibles do not have the same mystique that the 1964 1/2-1966 Mustang convertibles had, nor do they have the track prowess that the Mustang Coupes or Hatchbacks have on dragstrips or road courses across the country.  No, the 1983-1993 Mustang Convertibles are often looked down upon by the mainstream Mustang community (except for maybe Vanilla Ice but I don't know if he counts).  Well, we are about to change that.

1988 Mustang GT Convertible - Project IntroVert

The Specimen:  We have found a great candidate for our project, in the form of a 1988 Mustang GT Convertible. The car is black with a black top and factory sand beige cloth interior.  The GT still wears its factory turbine wheels, factory radio and red molding stripe. The stock 5.0L motor teamed with a T5-5 speed has almost 120,000 miles but looks and runs like new. This Mustang Convertible is, for the most part, unmolsted.  Only a set of dumped exhaust, a strut tower brace, and the effects of time have changed it from what it looked like when some proud owner drove it off the Ford lot back in 1988. This Mustang restoration needs, well, just about everything that your Foxbody convertible needs:  A new convertible top (maybe even a new frame!), weatherstipping, interior trim, emblems, carpet, upholstery, it needs it all!  Despite what it looks like, it really is a solid Mustang that can be driven anywhere!

The Plan of Action:  Only a few people here have owned a 1983-1993 fox body convertible, so we thought it would be nice for Latemodel Restoration Supply to buy one and have the Mustang here on site so that we can look at it, study it, fix it, blog it, and research it.  The best part is, everything will be documented as we do it! Install articles, videos and the parts we sell will bring this Pony back to it's past glory. You can follow along at home as we tackle the easy and the hard stuff through blogs here and on our Facebook page. Please keep checking back we want this to be not just our project, but a project for every enthusiast who has owned a Fox body Mustang convertible or is looking to add one to the garage. See all of our Project IntroVert Pictures here on our Flickr Page.

If you have a 1983-1993 Mustang convertible and are looking for parts, here is a good start to what we offer that are Mustang Convertible Specific. If you are looking for a great printed resource, please get this booklet as it will help you will a lot of Mustang convertible questions.

I'm glad to see this done. Lots of people told me my car was ugly and wasn't worth fixing up, but anyone who sees her now is speechless! I'm proud to know another convertible fox body will be beautiful!

As a 'vert owner, this is a very cool idea.

The first thing I would do is a "back to black" interior swap with Mach 1 seat upholstery.  The red stripe in the seats would go great with the red stripe on the car.

I am excited about this project!!! I had a 1991 GT convertible and out of all the Mustangs I have owned it's the one I regret selling the most. I got to drive our project car home for 4 hours in the driving rain with barely enough top to keep me dry. We picked the car up on Friday and intended on hauling it back on a trailer but ended up making a few a few stops on the way and using the trailer to pick up some truck cabs for other projects. Although the guys I was with kept offering to trade out driving it due to the weather and the possibility of getting soaked I decided to keep on trucking in it. The enjoyment of driving a bone stock Mustang out weighed the possibility of getting soaked. We got home at 4:00 o'clock in the morning and the car did not give us a lick of trouble!!! It turned out being a pretty fun adventure to say the least.

When you all convert it to mass air will there be a blog ? I bought my 88 T-top already converted to MAF, but as of late doubt the integrity of it.. So that just means more parts to order from you guys!--

On a side note my wife hates LMR when she sees our checkbook's

When u guys gonna get those little metal "u" pieces the back windows slide up and down in? The track between the back window and the top frame. The last five digits for Ford part # are 51558? I had to go to the junk yard for about a year before I got "lucky" and found a car that just came in so I could snatch 'em before they were gone.

The build will be featured here on this blog as well as on our FaceBook page. So far we have found out that the top frame is damaged beyond repair and we have purchased a top frame from a U-Pull-It from a donor 4cyl car for $125. We have not switched the frame yet, but it will be documented. Thanks for following the story!

Great to see another Fox Vert saved. These cars are just now starting to spark interest. I also have a 88 vert GT that I just finished a complete resto on down the nuts and bolts. Thanks LRS for supplying parts and customer service. looks like by the mirrors of project Introvert, that you have a speed density early 88. Cant wait to follow along with the build.

Can't wait, I have a 1990 white on white on.... titanium soon! New top, new paint, new gray bullitts. I currently have white leather from a alte 90's upfit but the car is back in play, with a twin turbo kit on the shelf and new block will have plenty to talk about. Keep up the great work and let us know how things are going, especially with the interior!

I'm stoked about your new project. I got an 89 LX Convertible with a 331 stroker, FMS E-cam, FMS 1.7 Roller Rockers, Full Exhaust, 65mm Throttle Body, Cold Air Intake, 2500 Stall Converter, PATC Stage 3 Dominator AOD, with a 3.73 rear. It has a boat load of other mods, new interior, and there is more plenty coming. I hope your project kicks ass. I need some new ideas. I think your project would be a good resource.

I can't wait to see how you guys tackle this.  I  have been wanting to start fixing things up  but not really sure how to do alot of it.

I will be watching this post as well. I have been working on my 88 GT convertible. It is Scarlet with a white top and white seats.  I have painted it and a put a new top on it from LRS. Thanks! I need to do the interior. I have new ultra clear head lights w/amber side markers(also from LRS). I would love to see you do a cobra brake conversion with sn95 spindles on the 88 and use 17x9 cobra R wheels front and back. I have seen it done on 91 up cars but not on an 88. I want to see how you deal with the smaller fender opening while still using 9inch rims. I also want to convert my car to mass air. I wish LRS made the interior trim panels for these cars as well.

Will be following you.  I have an '87 GT Hatchback, White with red stripe around it.  It is in pretty good shape except for the engine....it has 303,500 miles on it and is starting to make noise (Main bearing).  Want to fix but money is a problem now.  It still runs good and starts easily.

Five years age, I found a 1988 LX convertible in a garage that had been sitting for about four years according to the tag. I bought it for $850 with 61k miles on it. I painted it and had a new top put on it, and it looks great. I am sure your project will do as well. Keep up the good work.

This is great timing - I have a one-owner 88 GT Convertible, white on white leather, and I want to replace the top myself.  Never done this before so your project car is great for me.  Mine only has 55K miles but the top has seen a lot of motion and is showing it's age....

Thanks for the great parts and great project.

I presently own & drive an '89 Mustang LX convertible; origional smoke metallic blue with blue top 5.0\5-speed. I've bought & installed many parts from 50Resto with great results. P.S. I commute 75 miles a day,  drag race it(11.78@114mph last Saturday), & show it quite frequently. Fox 'verts in my opinion are the optimum fun in the sun & "do it all" kind of car that suits me well.

Just bought an '88 GT 'vert after selling my '92 many years ago, missed it more than any Mustang I've ever had, and look forward to getting right back into it with this one. Couldn't have been happier to see your new project as I've been out of the scene for a while and have no idea what's out there now. Look forward to all the ideas and lots of new parts in the near future,... looks like some replacement lighting, front and rear, could be first since she just got a new top! What are you guys considering for under the hood?

Our plans are to keep the car stock for now. We have taken several convertible specific parts from the car to investigate having them manufactured but for now the car sits about like the pictures show. However, we are gaining knowledge almost everyday having that car here to look at and tinker with as you guys ask questions. As we start doing more to it we will let evyone know with more blogs and facebook posts.

Glad to see you doing a vert. One thing I haven't been able to find is the quarter seals at the top of the B (door) pillar. They aren't very complex but no one has them. Also, the vert door pin/guide bushings located on the B pillar. Every vert needs these. Take a look and see how yours look.

I'm looking forward to following this post!

I too have an '88, GT, 5.0, Vert., Ext.two-tone gray w/blue pin stripe, Int. two-tone gray,  leather seats, black top.

My biggest projects will be : New top and new seat covers.I want to change wheels from original Turbines (a real pain to clean!) to a simple 5-star silver  design. I also want to upgrade exhaust system to that "sweet, mellow rumble" that Mustangs are noted for.

Everything is original except a newer radio/ CD player.

I have two questions: When does this car become a true "Classic"? I have heard 20 yrs. and 25 years. When it does, will the value increase substantially?

Let's get started!

I'm recently retired from the Air Force now living in England and bought my 87 mustang gt vert with me when I got stationed here in 1996.Has over 190,000 miles on the block and still pulls strong through all gears. Glad to see a project being done so I can get ideas to continually update mine with new parts. There's plenty of ponys running around here and the brits are taking notice. Good luck with the build!

Do you have anymore updates on your current project, the black convertable?  Myself I have a 1988 GT Mustang Convertable.  I found out its real refreshing that so many people have a great interest in this kind of car,, due to the fact that eveybody has one or always wanted a Ford Mustang.  Hoping to see the finished product soon.  Thanks for your time.

About btaylor

Been around cars and the car culture my whole life. Built up a 1957 Chevy truck for my first vehicle when I was 14, with a straight 6, split mainfold and 3 one barrel carbs. (It sounded like an angry Cessna!). I have owned a 1997 Camaro, a few trucks, fixed up a wrecked 1995 Mustang convertible and currently drive a 1997 Supercharged Regal GS and the wife drives a 2007 Suburban LTZ. I have a 11 year old girl and an 8 year old girl and a 2 year old girl! I love to play Little Big Planet, Madden football and Singstar on my PS3, golf and just about all sports. Go Mavs, Stars, Rangers and Cowboys!!!
