What does the future hold for the 2015 Mustang?

Share |

I was driving by the local Ford dealership and the lot actually has some cars on it now compared to just 6 months ago. There were a couple of 2010 V6 Mustangs up front and one 2010 Mustang GT. Black with white stripes, polished wheels, and if I was in the market for a new Mustang GT, that would be the car that I had to have, hands down. But what about next year? The "coyote" motor is supposed to debut offering around 400hp with the return of the 5.0L and the ceasing of the 4.6L. The V6 Mustang base model will get a power boost as well, giving the Mustang something to brag about to the factory horsepower kings of the Camaro and Challenger. The 2011 5.0L Mustang GT should be a real performer with its lighter weight and straight axle to keep the cost down. There are also rumors of the 2011 or 2012 Shelby SVT GT500 going back to a naturally aspirated motor which will make it a monster! Just ask anyone with a newer Z06 Corvette with its naturally aspirated 7.0L, boost is nice, but raw power and cubic inches are what hot rods and muscle cars are all about.

But what is past that? In the new economy and everything going green will there ever be a Hybrid Mustang? Maybe, maybe not. There are several foreign companies making big power Hybrids, but with all of that technology, also comes price. There have been rumors of the ecoboost twin turbo V6 from the new Taurus SHO showing up in a Mustang body as the reborn SVO, which may be fun. But when will that happen, and will the Mustang be successful in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015? Who knows, but regardless of what happens, I believe the Mustang and its following is here to stay. Just like the new Ford commercial says "they don't have minivan clubs". (Although I did see about 2 dozen Scion xB's in a trail on the highway this weekend). So if the 2013 Mustang GT is the same as the 2011 Mustang, it's OK and makes sense since they wouldn't want to make any big changes since the redesign in 2010. But in 2015, there could be an all new Mustang, there could be a new economy, a new president or if the Mayan calender has anything to say, it doesn't matter because the world is ending in 2012!

The 2015 Mustang could be a Hybrid, or could it be totally electric? What if the 2015 Mustang is a two seater or a hatchback? The 2015 Mustang could have 2 regular doors and 2 small rear doors for easy entry to the back seat like the Mazda RX-8. The 2015 Mustang may have a bed like a reborn Ranchero! What are your dreams for a future Mustang. What does your 2011 Mustang, 2012 Mustang, 2013 Mustang, 2014 Mustang, 2015 Mustang, 2016 Mustang look like?

I'd be happy with a 2012 Shelby GT500 with a turbocharged 400hp. 5.0L engine. Although, I'd prefer 7.0 engine. More engine growl, less turbo whine, but I'd take either.

I'd like to see the V6 become the Ecoboost 3.5L powered Mustang. Then have a couple different V8 engines with different configurations, n/a and sc for instance. The new Australia Ford Falcon rear wheel drive has a 4cyl ecoboost engine in it, so I see they're playing around with that configuration already.

I hope the GT remains forever a naturally aspirated V8 and available with little to no options. The idea of a new SHO power plant in an all wheel drive SVO with a slightly twisted appearance would be great and just might cause me to come off my theory of taking on personal debt.

The cobra should then simply follow the market for the Corvette crowd by making big power and offering a more balanced sports car.

To recap that would be a GT built for straight roads, SVO built for curvy roads, and Cobra built for both straight and curvy roads.

The 5.0 is coming back?! Looks like I may just have found a replacement for my '92 LX. Or should I keep the '92 and wait for the 50th anniversary....decisions, decisions. Hey btaylor, you know what's nice about having all daughters? They grow to be teens and still fit in the back of Mustang! I have two. If I had boys, they may grow too tall to sit back there. Life is great!! :-)

I agree about the Real Fastback model in the future.  Start with the 1970 model as a guide and make it look more like an Aston Martin DBS.  Eliminate the side body line where the side scoop is usually placed, as the 1970 model did.

About btaylor

Been around cars and the car culture my whole life. Built up a 1957 Chevy truck for my first vehicle when I was 14, with a straight 6, split mainfold and 3 one barrel carbs. (It sounded like an angry Cessna!). I have owned a 1997 Camaro, a few trucks, fixed up a wrecked 1995 Mustang convertible and currently drive a 1997 Supercharged Regal GS and the wife drives a 2007 Suburban LTZ. I have a 11 year old girl and an 8 year old girl and a 2 year old girl! I love to play Little Big Planet, Madden football and Singstar on my PS3, golf and just about all sports. Go Mavs, Stars, Rangers and Cowboys!!!
