A Brief History of LRS - 1999 to 2009

Share |

Man, how time flies!  It seems like only yesterday that we were hauling wood and hay bales to Mustang's 40th Anniversary in Tenessee for our Texas-themed display, or cutting the ribbon at the Grand Opening of our current location back in 2003 (Our prior accomodations basically being a couple of barns in Robinson, Texas). We have seen the boom's of new industry...and the aftermath's of a recession. Through it all we have profited from knowledge, strengthened our relationships with our customers and staff, and have grown to become a living success story in the automotive restoration & performance business.

Making Dreams a Reality...

A lot happened in those first four years. The owner, Shannon Guderian, started the company out of a 2-car rented garage with a phone and fax line.  His idea: To be the largest supplier of restoration components for 1979 and newer Mustangs.  He started Latemodel Restoration Supply in 1999 by brokering a few key restoration items to larger Mustang outfits.

The operation was profitable, and soon expanded to a size that the 2-car stall couldn't bear.  Adding a couple of employees and growing the product line led to a 1/3-page black-and-white ad in Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords in 2001 selling restoration parts for Fox body Mustangs on the retail level. Business soared from that little ad.  Timing was right.  Customers were looking for an outlet to purchase lights, weatherstripping, body and interior parts for thier 5.0 Mustangs.   Our first real catalog followed soon after, as well as larger color ads, and the expansion into performance parts and offerings for the 1994-98 vehicles, and the then-new 1999+ body style Mustangs

Movin' on up...

The Robinson barn-move helped to store all the new parts and employees, and business was on the rise. The LRS team was really starting to come together and everyone had their eyes on the future. The two buildings now housed a seperate sales area, showroom, and an efficient distribution warehouse. All these aspects combined to provide quicker and better service for all.

Building the new LRS...

As well oiled as our machine had become, a lack of space led us to shift the business to its current location in Hewitt, Tx in the fall of 2003.  The 25,000 square foot facility gave us the much-needed room for about 7,000 part numbers. An all new 1,800 sq ft showroom was built which would be home to a few of LRS's show and track cars including our 1979 Mustang Pace Car, 1995 Cobra R, and 2000 Cobra R. Needless to say, the move was tedious. Transporting thousands of parts, equipment, and supplies across town with trailers, moving trucks, and employee vehicles proved to be a daunting task. Overall, the move was a great step foward and the ample room would be more than enough for future expansions. Mustang parts operation had grown to encompass 1979-04 Mustang restoration, styling and performance parts.

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly...

2004 marked a turning point for Latemodel Restoration.  The year marked the 40th anniversary of the Mustang, as well as a new high-point for our business.  The move to our new facility translated into another milestone in the expansion of sales.  This expansion came with a price.  Growing pains were felt with the increasing number of employees and overhead.  With the big 40th production and the addition of more products, times were a bit chaotic.  The addition of our "CKResto" full-size Chevy/GMC truck line didn't help the chaos.

We came away with a lot of knowledge from that year.  We learned how to become more efficient, offer better service, grow our vehicle offering, and how not to haul wood to an event in Tennessee (if you didn't see this, it was a spectacle!  Imagine about 2 tons of lumber on a flat-bed behind a Lightning - not pretty!)  Our product offering continued to grow, our C/K line was becoming viable and had expanded to include newer 1999-2005 GM full size vehicles, and the initial sting of the move and the 40th was finally wearing off.

Full Steam Ahead!

The addition of the all new S197 Mustang in 2005 was a pivotal point in Mustang history, and a boost to our industry.  Aftermarket support continues to be strong for these cars.  They performed well, and had a whole new customer base.  Enthusiasts who hadn't owned a Mustang since the 60's could appreciate the retro styling of the new car.  There's little argument that the S197 cars were a welcome chapter in the book of Mustang.  We certainly embraced the new Mustang and the opportunities that came from it.  Now that the car is a few years old, we're really seeing how well it fits the Mustang enthusiasts, and how versatile the platform is.

2006-2008 brought us more and more products for our beloved Fox Mustangs, 1994-98 Mustangs, and new edge 'Stangs.  Our growing inventory and the popularity of our wheel and tire packages had forced the construction of a new 100x60 warehouse which expanded our facilities to 30,000 square feet. Our product line swelled to 30,000 part numbers with the addition of more C/K truck parts, as well as the addition of the new Dodge Challenger, Ford F-Series, and Dodge Ram products.

Unfortunately, this era also brought outrageous gas prices and a weak economy for most of the country. We saw the loss of some competetiors, and the emergance of new ones. LRS wanted to help our customers. We realized people still wanted the opportunity to restore and modify their vehicles but may not have been able to. So we began offering new programs such as our layaway, elayaway, and flat rate shipping promotions to help our customers save money and still get the parts they need and want.

10 Years and counting...

October 2009 marks our official 10-year birthday. Now with the addition of products for the new 2010 Mustang & Camaro, our product line is more dynamic than ever! It has been a great ride this past decade, and we are eagerly looking forward to the next 10, 20, or 30 years.  Who knows what the future will hold for the automotive industry, the Ford Mustang, and all of the other vehicles in our restoration & performance parts lineup. You can count on us being here to find out, and provide you with the service and products that you've come to expect from Latemodel Restoration Supply!

Its a great company to work for and to buy from I always try to ask fellow mustang owners where they buy there parts from. I was around when the company moved from our Robinson area to the new Hewitt site and to watch the company grow was great thing to see.

LRS is more than a company, it's a family.

I can remember when Shannon bought the binding machine to put together catalogs after hours at his house on the kitchen table.

A lot of employee's of LRS go why back to day of another company we all worked for building a life time of friendships and relationships, many talens coming together as one for a common interest.

There was way more that brought LRS around to what it is today and stems further back than 1999, but that's another story in it's self, but Shannon put alot of things on the line, friends, family, future, fun and most of all himself to give not only customers what they needed, but employee's an opportunity to excel in what they wanted to do.

LRS is an amazing story that would hopefully be a great book that some day Shan will write, something that a lot of us lived, but still didn't see all of it, there were a lot of struggles, a lot of great up lifting moments.

Funny to see things in pictures I haven't seen in years, the old two bay garage with my now sold Lightning in front of, or the white SVO I used to own in front of the old Robinson location, the memories of the two car garage expanding to the unit next door, and cutting the wall down to siamese the two together.

How the Robinson location like Jeff said was nothing more than a couple of barns so-to-speak, and how it turned into such a nice place after Shannon and crew had gotten done with it.

When Shannon got the location you all know today, when it was just a day or two old, we went there and he did big nasty doughnuts in what is the warehouse now, with his 2nd gen Lightning, and like the pictures that tell the story, the expansion of the location now.

Watching as own own cars made the catalog that everyone across the glob looks at, and later finding out that one of my students is driving one of those cars.

Really, there's way to much to say and tell, it would be cool to have an after party with a power point picture session, and hash out all the memories.

I will say that the building of the GT350R was the most trying time for me, it was a true test of two people, and even though is was a horrific moment for a friendship, I believe it showed two people what they were really made of, and how a firm foundation stands through the toughest of times.

To all of you at LRS, and Shannon and his family, keep up all the great work for you have built something more than a company, thank you for all that you have accomplished and have done.

I had heard that Shannon started his own company selling Mustang parts. Since I owned a Mustang it was an easy transition from finishing my 22 year career in the military to getting paid to talk and deal with Mustang enthusiast. I started in the Robinson building and it was what I would call "interesting"..lol.. then we made the move to the new facility and it was a pleasant and rewarding move to our own offices where we get to personalize it. I have been with LRS for 6 awesome years and plan on being here til I get too old to pick up the phone..lol. The blog from Jeff is so true. The company is one big close family and there is no other way to describe it. We consider all of our customers as family members too. Get online and buy that PREREGISTRATION and enjoy our celebration of 10 years as we plan to grow and provide the best service for the next 10 years. Once you get there, find me and accept my handshake and conversation.... See ya there.... Bryan

I work at Latemodel Restoration Supply. I really consider it having fun where I get paid.

I have not been here long a little over a year... I got here as quick as I could... I only wish I could have been here from the beginning. I don't want to date myself but I have had jobs all over this world thanks to military service and have been working in the industry over 10 years. LRS is by the far the best place I have ever worked. The employees here are great. I feel these guys and gals are extended family. It just a pleasure being a part of a company that really cares about their employees and their customers. I guess I am trying to say I feel fortunate to be here an hope to be here a long time.

Shannon took a chance on hiring a graphic artist he had not seen since high school and we both quickly realized that we were a perfect fit. Increasing magazine ads and starting a website for the company were a lot of fun and now running the advertising and research departments, the fun has never stopped. As others have said, I truly enjoy working here and really have a great relationship with everyone here. Shannon is a strong businessman, an idea machine and a great friend that has helped me through a lot. Thanks for having the idea for this wonderful company, even for us Chevy guys!

It's hard to believe it has been 10 years. I have been here all but 3 of those years. I did work with Shannon before in a past life. I started shortly after the first ad came out and the company was really steaming forward. It sure has been a fun ride. This is by far the best job I have ever had and I am not just saying that because I work here. There is truly a since of family here. I would give the shirt off my back for any of the folks here and feel as they would do the same for me. Starting from the top down. It's rare to have that feeling about your boss and co-workers. I can't wait to see what the next ten years have in store for us.

I met Shannon about 13 years ago while I was working for a  company that supplied LRS with their packaging needs. Then when the company I was working for down sized, he called me & wanted to know if I would like to work for him!  Now not knowing alot about cars except to put gas in them and go, he assured me that I could do it. So he worked closely with me in the purchasing deptment.  Shannon said that since I did not drive a Mustang I would have to park in the back of the building!

July - 2010 it will be 8 great years working in the Purchasing Department!  We are a big family here and have seen employee's getting married and also starting their families. Oh...and also some of us having Grandchildren!  :)

Thanks Shannon for taking a chance in life and for letting us be a part of it!

I started just as an enthusiast buying parts from LRS for my '95 GT when I was given the opportunity to work there. I started in the warehouse and learned the ropes and helped with the big move in late '03 before moving into the advertising department. I enjoy working with everyone here and have loved making this into my career. It truly is like one big family and I have made a lot of friends over the years.

I started working here about 2 and a half years ago and I couldn't ask for a better company to work for. I remember coming in when I was about 17 and drooling over some of the cars in the showroom before I worked here. I've learned so much about the company since I've started working here and I love reading posts like these that show the history about the company and it makes me proud to be one of Shannon's employees.

Again congratulations on 10 years and counting!!!

I made the trip from Midland, Tx for the grand opening of the Hewitt store with a couple of friends of mine from the Dallas area. It is not every day that the owner of a company will personally give you the grand tour of a facility but Shannon did and we really appreciated it. He took the time to show us all the good stuff. :>)

I still can not believe it has been that long. Anyway I hope the business keeps growing strong as I am always in the need for restoration/performance mustang parts!!

Time certainly flies!  I first met Shannon in 01 when he hooked me up with some parts for my 93.  He offered me a job at that point, but I had other plans in life & politely declined.  Funny how things work out as I ended up working for him anyway just 2 years later.  April 2010 marks my 7th year with the company, & what a 7 years it has been!  There have been ups & downs along the road but the knowledge & experience gained along the way is priceless.  As several others have already stated, we aren't co-workers, we're family!  Being a part of the growth of this company is an awe inspiring experience that I wouldn't trade for anything.  I very much look forward to the years to come & hope they are as blessed as the years that have past.

life will let us. With the help from your company we will be rolling for many more years. Thanx and keep up the good work.     P.S. Congratulations on 10 years and running.
