Vote now! White letter in or out on 1986 GT?

Share |

Ahh the 1980's. The 5.0L is back, the Berlin wall came down, and MTV played videos. What a great time to be an American. Although the Mustang and Camaro were not the muscle cars they were back in the day, they were starting to be performers again. Well, the Mustang anyway, by introducing fuel injection for the masses, a lightweight body and tried and true V8 made it a true performer. Now, back to the root of the story. In the sixties raised white letter tires were the in thing. Sure the trend overlapped into the seventies and maybe decreased a little towards the end but came back in the eighties as people were trying to hold onto that muscle car feel.

The question is that now, in 2009, is it OK to rock a Four Eye '86 GT with white letters out to be more period correct, or does it just look goofy. We want to know!!!

YES, IT LOOKS GREAT, WHERE'S MY MEMBERS ONLY JACKET AND DARK SUNGLASSES? WHITE LETTERS OUT!

NO, THEY DIDN'T COME WITH WHITE LETTERS FROM THE FACTORY, YOU ARE RUINING THAT CAR AND EVERYTHING MUSTANG STANDS FOR! BLACKWALLS FOREVER!

CHANGE IT UP, C'MON MAN, PEOPLE ARE PUTTING 26'S ON OLD COP CARS NOW, YOU NEED AT LEAST SOME 17'S AND UPGRADE TO 5-LUG WHILE YOUR AT IT!

 Please, Tell us your opinion!

If you are gonna rock the white letters you should at least run the tire that made it popular. So it should say BFGoodrich. The only white letter tires I ever rocked was a set of PRO-TRAC's which was a popular sticky street tire back in the late day.

I would do white letter out only if it were BFGoodrich Radial TA's, any other no name tire would have to be white letter in.

OMG! get those butt ugly white letter tires off of that pristine four eye immediately, next thing you know we will need period correct "redlines" from the Sixties. NONONO!

The white letters make me think of a V-6. They used a lot of white walls in the 80's. They do not look bad but they do not look as muscular for some reason.

I have always been a fan of white letter tires.  I painted the letters on the 18" Kumhos I have on my 2000 GT 'vert, and I think it looks great...but I guess that's just my opinion.

I recently searched for white letter Good Years for my white 91 Notch, It looks awesome on the old Shelbys.so i figured its a def.  My guy told me I couldnt get an outlined raised letter for my 225's. I REALLY WANT THOSE RAISED WHITE LETTERS!

I used the TrimBrite Tire Lettermate pen.  The pen's lasted a couple years now.  You can get it at an auto parts store or do a search on line.

I have a all black 88 LX, it had white letters, I took them off, I would only do white letters on BFG's, nothing else.

White letters are soooo 70s, man! 25 years ago I ditched the TRXs on my '79 Cobra for 14" wheels and tires. The store mounted 'em white letters out. I was back next day getting them turned.

I think the white letter tires look great on the car, especially with the stock 'rotary-phone dial' wheels....Having said that, I would definitely ditch the white letters if you switch to an aftermarket or different wheel...Personally, I think a set of charcoal Bullitts would look awesome with a set of low-profile tires on this car!!

But, wow...NICE CAR!!!! Love the 4-eyes, especially the 83-84.....

No white letters!  I love your 86 but would go with blackwalls and maybe even some early 90's 5 spoke 16's or Cobra 17's

BTW, I have 3 girls and am a lifelong Cowboy fan too.

Keep rockin the white letters! Don't listen to the nay sayers, because with the white letters clean and gleeming against the black of the tire, it's a nice look and it's a truly retro look! Before you know it, the nay sayers will be following suit with their own set! KEEP BIG BOSSIN, NOW THAT"s OLD SCHOOL!

the way you have the car looking. The white lettering makes look that much smoother. Cars like that are dieing off fast.

About btaylor

Been around cars and the car culture my whole life. Built up a 1957 Chevy truck for my first vehicle when I was 14, with a straight 6, split mainfold and 3 one barrel carbs. (It sounded like an angry Cessna!). I have owned a 1997 Camaro, a few trucks, fixed up a wrecked 1995 Mustang convertible and currently drive a 1997 Supercharged Regal GS and the wife drives a 2007 Suburban LTZ. I have a 11 year old girl and an 8 year old girl and a 2 year old girl! I love to play Little Big Planet, Madden football and Singstar on my PS3, golf and just about all sports. Go Mavs, Stars, Rangers and Cowboys!!!
