JBA Dominator GTA - New Photos

Share |

I took some new pics of the Dominator today so I figured I would share them. I also updated the website for the Dominator with new pics from present day along with never before seen pics of the developmental stages, check it out http://jbadominator.com/

Since Latemodel Restoration Supply has taken ownership of the car it has not just been rotting in the showroom, it has been back tearing up the track! Road course track time has been logged at the SVTOA event at Texas World Speedway in Bryan and at the Tulsa Shelby Meet in Tulsa Oklahoma. Many people at those events stopped by once they realized that this was the ORIGINAL Road & Track shoot out car and told stories about how they remember it in all the magazines and that it IS one of the most influential Fox bodies of all time.

How about you guys? Do you remember the Dominator from back in the day? If so, let us know what you thought in the comments!

If you go to the Dominator website you can see a scan of the brochure of the Dominator GTB body kits.

Some people really dislike the wide-body but I think it's pretty sweet.

Thanks for keeping the JBA Dominator as was intended, a true prototype but production based, a Super Car by Ford. We used trans am racing as a link long before we ever thought Ford would ever build a GT or even that SVT would rise out of SVO. A little known fact is that we built a 585 CID JBA engine to go into the Dominator and run at Bonneville. It never made it into the Dominator but it too still lives and with today's engine management capabilities it would have been interesting to see its next development. That project was a collaboration between us and included sitting in a cubical with a young Ford Engineer named Brian Wolfe with the support of Hank Dertian and Ed Lyons of SVO. In 1989 getting the ECM was not the problem; the project ended in the manifold design process. We felt the project had to be EFI and the economic slow down of the early 1990's slowed the project, eventually ending it. Our A460 headed engine made with a 1- 4v Holley 870 HP and now lives in a San Diego nostalgia drag race '61 Starliner.

Nice to see the "A" car back in shape and from the photo's I see it still has the rear license plate bracket off my 66 Fairlane. LOL. We needed something to cover up the fuel filler and the bracket off my parts car was the quickest thing availabe. I have a lot of memories on and off the track with this car from my days at JBA. My favorite version was with the Capri hatch. I believe the body kit for the GTB (87-93 LX) is still available from a wingswest. They handled the production of the body kits for us back then.

@Mark - That's hilarious! Looks like Wings West does still carry the Dominator body kit. Here is a link: Dominator Body Kit

If I recall(and I have looked for specs on it)when JBA was building this car, there was a cleveland head engine for it with something like 358 CID. I think it was ment to be a MPI but ended up a carbed motor. any info let me know. fomoco85@yahoo.com thanx

@JJ Goodwin - I'm not sure. I'll ask around and let you know if I come up with anything.

The original motor for the top speed shootout was a Yates headed 358 small block with a carburator. Basically a NASCAR motor. This being the original car, it has had several engine combinations for testing purposes by JBA.

Nate,

Nicely presented. I always thought the Fox Mustang wide body kits were pretty wild. There was another design that replaced the front headlight covers with a narrower & longer cover design. I think Tim Allen raced a version of that one ...

I made my own set of fiberglass wide body fenders. Although not nearly as radical as the Dominator. Just the front and rear fenders, no other body parts.

The Dominator body kit is on ebay for $1,900.00 an change. I think if you type in 1990 Mustang, then set the search to highest price first, then go down the list you will find the Dominator body kit. I have noticed that it's not exactly the same as the real Dominator though.

Which sucks in my opinion.

I want to know why 5.0 resto keeps that lame hatch on the car, that hatch was put on the car long after the car was built to push the mini dominator wing that JBA was try to push at the time. they need to put the mercury capri hatch back on the car.

Actually, we re-installed the original capri hatch right before we sold it, I think it adds a lot of character! It's definitely unique.

@jony terror - It's hard to say people seem to have a love hate relationship with the dominator's wide fenders. Good luck on having it made though. Let us know when it's done and send us some pics!

hey.nate, I have always liked the dominator and have had the fortune of finding a 1990 that was being built by some students and is now on its way to my coral of ponies. the car is beautiful and is pearl white with many of the true dominator ammenities,. the original engine is in the car with its original 35,000 miles but the 351 lightning block and world product aluminum heads that are soon to be put in the car and mated with a incredibal turbo system by the famous guys at TURBO TECH OF TACOMA wa. will truly make this car dominate ! I give great credit to the students of NEW MARKET VOC TECH for doing a great job on the car they deserve it.

My name is Nathan and I am a C# developer by trade. My favorite movies are A Clockwork Orange and Fight Club, my favorite TV shows are Arrested Development and The Office. I also enjoy motocross and supercross. I am happily married and have two little girls. I became an auto enthusiast at age 16 when I purchased a 1988 GMC C1500 long bed, it was two-tone blue and ugly as sin. But it had a 350 and I flogged on it regularly. It's been all down hill from there. My current project is an 89 Chevy C1500 short bed.
