99-04 Mustang Headlight Replacement

Share |

With more people keeping their Mustangs a little longer than usual more people are looking toward the restoration side of our business, which is exactly what I did when my sister passed up on a new car to keep hers.  She has a 2000 V6 that she has had since new, and it has been everything she has expected and more for a daily driver but now she is starting to show some wear. The main thing is her headlights.

The foggy looking housings were making it difficult to see at night and dated the car.  The headlight kit we installed is listed as a stock replacement for the 01-04 Mustangs that have the "tinted" style headlight, but this is a great upgrade for the 99-00 stangs. This also has to be the easiest headlight replacement ever, my thanks to the Ford engineer that came up with the design. Removing the headlight is super easy, just pull up on two retainers that hold the headlight in, pushing the headlight back with a little pressure helps.

Once the two retainers are out, just pull out on the headlights gently and they will pop loose. There are two wire connectors that need to be replaced, one for the headlight and one for the sidemarker. It is important to note here the new headlights are complete with new bulbs and ready to go, so once you disconnect the old light, plug the new lights in and push back. Replace the two retainers and you're done. The difference is amazing!

Not only does the clear lens make a huge difference, but the tinted style headlight looks 10 x better than the stock piece.  Here is the front end with both headlights.

We also replaced the quarter panel scoop, insert, and attaching hardware.  Since the original was missing, replacing it was as easy as sliding the clips into the scoop, inserting the grille, and snapping it into place.

I have an 04 GT with this same problem.  It totally takes away from the look of the car.  I have bought a new headlight kit but waiting to install them until some other goodies are painted, so I can also install my new foglights and do everything at once.  And yes, I am also impressed how easy it is to take the headlights out since I did when I got home much to the husband's dismay that I was taking my car apart again.

Steve,

Unless your connector is broken you will be able to reuse the one on the car. When I say replaced, I mean they are taken off the old lights and pluged into the new ones. All you need is the headlight kit, everything else is reused.

About Devo

I have an 86 Mustang GT that is my ongoing project. I have been into Mustangs since I can remember, wether it was riding in the back of my fathers 66 GT fastback, learning to drive at 14 in my brothers 66 coupe, or cruising in my first car, a 91 LX conv.
