22" Torq Thrust M Wheel & Tire Kit for 05-09 Mustang

Share |

Yes, you are seeing that right!! 22" wheels for S197 Mustangs. I know what your are thinking..... will those fit or that will look rediculous. Well in the spirit of seeking out all Mustang truths we decided to go out and test these wheels out on my Mustang. The results were that the wheels fit and it is completely driveable!!! I have Steeda Sport Springs on my car and there were no problems. They make the car look as though it should be on a magazine cover or car show. The wheels are 22x9.5 American Racing Torq Thrust and the tires are Nankang N-990 255/30/22.

Here is a link to the kit installed on my car 2005-09 Mustang Torq Thrust M Wheel & Tire Kit - 22"x9.5"

Now I know the next thing that is going through your mind is... These must cost a fourtune. WRONG! You can have a set for $1,099.99 mounted and balanced! They will ship for $14.99 in the 48 states.

Update: June 1, 2009 - Since this blog was written the price on these wheels has gone up substantially to $1549.99. Mounting and balancing are still free and shipping is still only $14.99. We apologize for any inconvenience.

not a big fan of such a big wheel on Mustangs, but they sure do fill up the fenderwells.  looks a lot better than i expected.  probably not the best for performance but it will definitely turn heads.  painted finish makes them not look too blingy.

They look too big, but as for the wheel itself they look good. I think a 19" or 20" would luck much better.

the car looks sick who cares about performance

Exactly Phil... I drive a V6 so I am not overly concerned with performance.

I tell you they would look so much better on a redfire GT rather than that ugly silver!  J/K Jefe

Thanks Chad.... I just wish I was as privileged as you are to own a redfire Mustang. :)

Hi Guys.

I think it look awesome! The only sad thing is that they are not wide enough, they should be at least 12" wide withe something like 335/25-22. But then they wouldn't fit the car without some major bodywork, and it's a com+pletely different business of course.

Whatever, they look supercool in my opinion! I'm building a Ac Cobra replica and I will use the exact same rims, but 20" and a lot wider...

Please check out my site for furtehr info. Only in Swedish at the moment, but the english version is launched in a couple of weeks. But the pic's is worth a visit. (It's a private site and nothing commercial business at all, what so ever!)

Today I'm driving a Mustang SVT Cobra Coupe -96 in my daily driving and my wife have a Mustang GT Coupe - 96, both all black. The Ac Cobra will be for fun, and our dream is to sell both -96 Mustangs and buy a Shelby GT 500. In sweden after import taxes and they cost 70.000 USD.......

Stay cool Guys !!

really nice! but a lil bit too big. people usually look for lightwieght instead of big and heavy wheels.

nate said:

@stang72 - It all depends on what you are looking for in a wheel. Like Todd and phil said, not everyone is looking for pure performance.

Man, I think that looks pretty cool, but I wonder how it rides.  I just switched out my factory 18" wheels for a set of 20" Shelby Razors, and the ride is noticeably more harsh than stock.  I can't imagine what my car would ride like with 22" wheel son the roads I drive on.  Sure does look cool, but I'd probably hit a pothole and bend 'em the first week!

nate said:

@TGR 96 - We just mounted these wheels to Jeff's car for a test fitting but I can imagine that the ride would be pretty stiff. I guess that's the price you have to pay for fashion!

i bought the same kind of weels but in black and im not shure what tires to buy some people tell me 245/30/22 but i think there too small what do u guys think. my mustang is an 07 v6.

edavis said:

the 245/30/22 would be a little smaller than the tires that are pictured here. I would go with the 255/30/22.

any idea if those rims and tires would work on an 05 gt with an eibach sportline kit? its a 1.6" drop in the front and a 2" drop in the rear. im just worried about rubbing in the front fenders

March 19, 2009 10:08 PM

nate said:

@badass05 - I am not sure. Jeff's car has a Sportline kit which is supposed to lower the car 1" in the front and he onle has about 3/4 of an in of clearance between the front tires and the fender.

March 20, 2009 8:40 AM

Badass05 said:

only 1" in the front?  why does the eibach website give such different numbers?  does he have to same rim and tie setup on his car? Thanks

March 20, 2009 1:42 PM

nate said:

@Badass05 - I'm sorry. I meant to say that "Jeff's car has the Steeda Sport Spring kit".

I got my spring kits mixed up.

Jeff doesn't currently have this setup on his car because this was just a test fitting. But Jeff is the owner of the car in the pictures.

Sorry for the confusion.

Badass05 said:

Oh, ok. that makes sense now, guess ill play it safe and go with the eibach pro kit.  Thats still lower than the steeda kit tho. guess we'll have to see

i want to get a lowering kit for my mustang which one would you recommend and what all do i need to buy i want to get it done correct and not have it warring out my tires like it dose on my honda

April 16, 2009 10:56 AM

nate said:

@aleks - Jeff had the Steeda sport springs on his car (part # ST-5558215), if you have an 05-up stang I would go with that.

As for your tires wearing out, after you install the lowering springs make sure to have your front-end re-aligned. You can purchase the Eibach camber adjustment bolts (part # EIB-581260K) instead of caster camber plates and save yourself a couple hundred dollars.

so what would be better steeda or eibach

@aleks - For springs I would go with Steeda

nate said:

@aleks - Hope it's nothing too serious. We pack our wheels pretty carefully to try to prevent anything like that from happening.

What finish are these? All I can find online are anthracite and chrome, these look like neither, or is just my eyes?

April 29, 2009 7:30 AM

nate said:

@Roland - They are anthracite, the color of the pictures is a little off and it makes it harder to tell, but they are anthracite.

Im wondering if these wheels rub at all.  I love the look but i am apprehensive about the ride quality.  I would love to see a video of these things actually moving.

May 1, 2009 12:52 PM

nate said:

@Mike - I wish I could give you a definite answer but we just put these wheels on the car for a test fitting. In the blog Jeff said he had no problems even with the lowering springs installed. Also the tires are pretty low profile so that reduces the overall diameter.

btaylor said:

If you are going for show, that is pretty cheap for 22" wheels and tires.

May 1, 2009 1:31 PM

aleks said:

Mike they do rub a little when you turn the wheel all way but nothing to worry about as for the ride the tires are really low profiles so you do feel more of those road bumps but thats what happens when you want big wheels i guess over all the wheels look sick on my car

DUB - looks good - fills out the wheel wells nicely.

OT - btw - do you know of anyone making a quality (non-wood) rear seat delete (RSD) kit for the S197 Mustang?

Before Saleen went under they had a sweet carbon fiber prototype RSD installed in a red Coupe on the left coast ...

One of the Mustang Magazines had a custom aluminum one fabricated ...

Shelby used to offer a fiberglass one for the Gen I cars - still available new today (SDE) for under $100 ...

Best.
