05-09 (S197) Mustang Fuel Filter Install

Well Ford went and did it. The fuel filter location has finally changed. For all of you pre-2005 owners, the filter is no longer in front of the rear end. It has been moved under a cover that is located on the driver-side under-body. The fuel filter is listed on our website as Part# FG1083. I changed mine with 15,000 miles on it and the gas that came out was “nasty” to say the least. I would try to change the filter every 15,000 miles. The install is easy and quick. It is taking me longer to write this than it took to change it out :) .

Tools Needed:

  • Jack and jackstands
  • 10mm socket and wrench
  • Eye protection

Steps I followed:

  1. Disconnect the battery before starting install to insure you don't have your fuel pump on. Jack up the front driver side of the vehicle. Support it with jackstands. You can never be to careful !

  2. Located the big black cover on the under-body. It is located below the seat area. You can follow the fuel lines from the tank.

  3. The cover is held on by a few 10mm nuts (pictured below) and a “push pin”. Once the nuts have been removed and little prying action is required to pull the cover down because of the “push pin”.

  4. Once the cover is removed, you will see the fuel filter. The new style filter doesn't require any special tools for removal. Simply click the button (pictured below...the left and right arrows) and pull. To keep from making a mess with the fuel that will spray out, I put a rag under the connectors before releasing them.

  5. Simply unbolt the bracket holding the filter in place (pictured above).Replace with new filter and repeat above process in reverse.

When doing something like this it always makes me feel better if the fuel is nasty, makes me feel like it was time and money well spent.

Hey thanks man! I've been meaning to change mine on my 07-V6 & wasn't sure weather I could do it myself or not. Now I know I can. Very cool.

There is no specific tool that I know of. The green tabs can be pull out with a flat headed screw driver and the line will release.

Wait a minute...do you push the green tabs in, or pull them out with a screw driver?

Just finished the job...You push the green tabs in!

You had to pull the clips out of the old style filters and replace them, the new ones you push the green tabs, and pull the hoses off.

Your post was very detailed so thanks for posting. Changed it on my '08 and performance is greatly improved. Also I will say although it is quick and easy, never get careless. I had an old friend recently that was doing some work on his car, failed to use anything other than a jack. Yeap, the jack slipped. from what I was told he died instantly. So just let that be a lesson, never take anything for granted. We all have friends, family, kids, do it for them if not for yourself. Thanks again for the post.

@NM - Sorry to hear about that, our condolences go out to his family. I know that I have been careless with jacks in the past. It's scary to think that it can come to an end by something that seems so trivial. Being raised on a farm it seemed commonplace for me to be in harms way of some type of large machinery. Now that I look back I can't believe that I'm still here.

should you release the fuel pressure first, before removel ?

@gtphil - It would not be a bad idea to release the pressure but on an 05-09 Mustang it's not really possible.

Instead just have a drain pan ready and use a rag to cover the connection when you remove it so gas doesn't spray everywhere.

This is a great write up, except you missed a couple of important information.

That's not true Nate. You should relieve fuel pressure first.

Got to your fuse box and remove the fuel pump relay which is 21 if you look in the manual.

Start the engine and wait (let it idle) for it to stall or it might not even start.

After engine stalls turn ign switch off and disconnect the neg battery cable. Then follow procedures that are above. Return everything back before starting the engine. Play safe and enjoy.

Anyone can do this, just try it see how easy it can be, but be careful.

I noticed the fuel lines tabs on the v6's look different. They're smaller and slim. Don't try to pull because you'll damage it. Don't waste time by pushing in with your thumb. Use a small flat head screw driver (save yourself some time) and push it slightly in and pull the filter out. It's a good thing I just happened to walk by that 06 v6 because they would of pull that tab out. Keep in mind sixers! Play safe.
