2010 Mustang: Final Thoughts

Share |

Listed below are some final noteable changes and options Ford has added:

Powertrain:

Ford did not change much from the 05-09 models. There is still an option for the 4.0L (210hp/240lb.ft) V6 or 4.6L V8. The V8 engine did get to see some minor upgrades. It got a power increase from 300hp to 315hp, mainly due to the use of a new cold air intake. The cold air intake appears to use a larger mass air housing. This is a nice addition to vehicle but I would have rather seen more power – PI heads (throwback to the 99-04 redesign), more displacement or a combination of both. The transmissions are still the 5spd automatic and 5 speed standard transmissions.

Other Performance additions:

AdvanceTrac electronic stability control will be standard on all models. Sport Mode will also be available on the GT Premium addition. The Sport Mode leaves the AdvanceTrac on but keeps it limited for what Ford calls “more spirited driving”.

Ford has also improved the suspension. The engine bay will get a front strut tower bar and to help out in the turns Ford decided to go with larger sway bars on the front and rear.

Other notable features:

The Mustang no longer has a gas cap!! It will have what Ford is calling Easy Fuel Capless Fuel Filler System. Yes I know that is a long name; I'm sure someone will give it a shorter creative name.... No Fuel Cap System. This system helps reduce fuel evaporation and you don't have to worry about if you put the cap back on. Ford also installed SOS Post Crash System on all models. This system will sound the horn and automatically activate the hazard lights after a crash.

Final Thoughts on the 2010 Mustang:

Ford definitely added a lot of great new features. The exterior redesign will probably take some time to grow on me. The interior is excellent in my opinion. It has everything I wish my car had. If Ford would just put add more power so that the Mustang doesn't fall to far behind the Camaro - we will be just fine. Now that Mustang “fanboys” can no longer speculate about what the 2010 Mustang will look like, I guess you guys are left with wondering what special editions are in the pipe line. I still have my fingers crossed for a aluminum block DOHC 5.0L/5.4 6spd Mach 1 or Boss car. Until then, here are a few other pictures for you all to check out.

I don't know.....  It's appeal didn't jump out like the introduction of the 05's.  Looking @ all the sneak peak photos on www.the2010mustang.com had me stoked!  It's kinda like one of those movie trailers that have all the good parts in it, but then the movie is kinda of a bust?......

It looks as though Ford is cheapening their trademark muscle car making it look like a sub compact racer. It is getting too sleek and will definitely draw the younger more aggressive crowd. I am going to buy the new challenger after owning over 20 mustangs it appeals more to me and has an awesome look and ride.

At first glance I thought I was looking at the new Camaro.  This may boost sales of the Challenger, which in my opinion is the better looking of the three.

The Mustang is going to have the bigger following, the Camaro will have the best drivetrain and bang for the buck and the Challenger has the best looks. It is still going to come down to personal preference.

I completely agree with btaylor.... I remember people complaining about the looks of the "new edge SN95 (99-04)" when they first came out. I kept hearing people say it was ugly, edgey and didn't look like a Mustang. I guess it grew on people because it went on to become on of the more popular Mustangs.

Once again Ford has missed the mark and are falling behind the rest of the pack with a under powered design of the S197 design. They look like they wanted to compress the front grill area and squeeze in the frog lamps, and whats up with the rear end the slanted tail lights look like a rice burner knock off design. The V6 front end looks more aggressive than the GT does, with the frog lamps mounted in the bumper like the Shelby GT500. Either they come up with other engine options in the future for this design or be prepare to eat every ones dust meaning challengers and camaro.

Ok, I just got back from the L.A. Autoshow the other day and I have to say is what happened to the rear of the car. I got to see and finally sit in the new Challenger, saw the new Camaro SS although still couldn't get real close to it yet and of course got to see and sit in the 2010 Mustang GT. Overall the Mustang is real nice. The interior looks really good. Like the more aggressive front end but the rear of the car is just horrible! What's with the 45 degree angles at the corners? Didn't see it as much on the website but in person, good Lord! Kills the whole look of the car from the side and back. I currently own an '01 SS and a '92 Mustang GT which is my project play toy. I have been a long time fan of both brands, but right now my choice would be a Challenger if I was in the market to buy a Ponycar. It's just dead sexy!!

Mustang92man, your a lucky guy to see all of these cars!!! I wish I had the ability to see these cars in person; I know it really hard to give an extremely detailed account of the car when I am only going off pictures and writing on the web. I do agree with you on the fact that the rear end of this car leaves a lot to be desired.  The looks of the Challenger are great but the performance leaves a lot to be desired. My 08 GT still is much quicker than the Challenger in the 1/4 mile. I can't wait to sit in and possibly drive the new Camaro. A three way comparison will be saved for another day :)

I think the most depressing about all this, is that the Base Camaro, w/ a V6 puts out 15Hp LESS than the Mustang GT V8, and it cost about $7500 LESS than the Mustang GT.

I am a big and LONG time Mustang Fan, all the way back to Jr High getting my very first car, a 1966 Coupe Mustang with a hot little 289, and I ripped out the C4 for a 4spd Toploader. Since then I have owned over 20 different Mustangs, from 1966 Coupe, a 1968 GTA Fastback (S code... like a dumb_ss I sold it) 69 Mach 1 (M code) numerous Fox Bodies, about 5 different SN95s, and my most recent was a 2005 Mustang GT. But now, based on what is available from Chevy and the 2010 Camaro I would rather fork out an extra $5k for a 6pd and 420Hp, or the rumored LS7 Camaro, 6pd and 550Hp.

I hear and read everyone’s hopes and dreams of that 5.0 or 5.4 powerplant in the Mustang, and it seems to me, that if Ford really wanted to stay in the "pony car" market, they would have done it this year.

But hey, what do I know; in the late 80's early 90's Ford was rumored to replace the Mustang with the Probe, and the people spoke by going out and buying up every Mustang on every Ford lot in the country. Even as GM brought out the WS6 Firebird and the SS Camaro, it wasn't enough to keep it in production. Even the Camaro Z28 was producing 305Hp, and the anemic 4.6SOHC was putting out a Blazing 215hp, the Mustang still had better sales numbers than the Camaro and Firebird.

In this day and age with so much working against the “Pony Car” market; (economy, emissions, government restrictions, government hand outs…) I don’t understand why a company like Ford would put a product out there, that is already miles behind it arch rival. It seems that Ford is asking for a failure. But to hang the hopes and dreams of the Mustang on the Shelby name is kind of ironic now. Because unfortunately it is the only thing out there that can compete with the new Camaro SS, because the Mustang GT has a 105Hp deficit that is going to take a lot more than just a cold air intake, and a performance tune to overcome.

It is bittersweet for me. Been a Blue Oval fan my whole life, now when I rate these two side-by-side I can’t help to give in to my inner Hot Rodder. I think for the first time in my life I will be at a Chevy Dealership negotiating a trade of my Ford Mustang GT for a Camaro SS.

jsprek01, it kind of reminds me of the late '80's where the Camaro/Firebird put out more horsepower but everyone still wanted the Mustang. Probably because of weight and no manual for the Z28 of the day(and everyone knows that a stock 4.3L 5-speed S-10 would outrun a stock 5.0L 5-speed Camaro!) Chevy has done it's homework regarind the new Camaro, despite how everyone thinks it looks, it will be a performer. It just may be too late to save the current "musclecar boom" that we are in from more restrictions and government action.

About jjimenez

I have and always will be a Mustang fanatic! My first car was a V6 Mustang after putting myself through college and LOTS of saving.... I recently purchased a 2008 Mustang GT. Most of my Mustang experience lies in the modular motors. My brother and I have built and swapped multiple mod motors in the past. We have perfected the SN95 V6 motor swaps!! LOL
