Top 10 Quickest Production Mustangs

Share |

I've compiled a list of the 10 quickest 1/4 mile Mustangs, as delivered from Ford, from reputable sources.  I know, you guys will argue with me on this, but I only went off of test data from valid sources, and not old wive's tales, your grampa's stories or "my buddy's car" stories.  Just the facts.  I also didn't put any "tuner" cars on the list, such as the KR, Saleens, Shelby GT's, etc., just the cars as they came from Ford.  There are TONS of conflicting magazine times, but I took the ones I could easily find that are relatively current, and, in my opinion, accurate.  Here's how they fell:

  1. 07-08 Mustang Shelby Cobra GT500 - 12.6 @ 114.2, Motor Trend - No surprise, here.  500 horsepower

  2. 03-04 Cobra, 2000 Cobra R - 12.9 @ 112, Car and Driver, 12.9 @ 110.8, Motor Trend - Tie.  03-04 Cobra gets it on mph, but ET is a tie.  We did say "quickest", not "fastest".

  3. 03-04 Mach 1, 5-speed - 13.2 @ 106.7, Motor Trend - Sure quick for a stock 4.6 with no power adder.  The auto is slightly behind it, but I didn't want to quibble over auto or standard.  Automatic comes in as an honorable mention.  Mach 1 owners, you get the nod for 3rd quickest on my list.

  4. 96-01 Cobra - these all perform very closely, and slightly behind the Mach's.  Car and Driver went 13.5 @ 105 with an 01 Cobra, which is the last of the natural Cobra's and the one with the most horsepower.  The 96-98 cars are down a little on power, but also on weight.

  5. 08 Bullitt, 68-70 Cobra Jet Mustang - Car and Driver says the new Bullitt runs a 13.6 @ 104.  I've got an old issue of Road and Track from 1988 that picks the 68 Cobra Jet to run a 13.6 @ 106.6

  6. 05-07 Mustang GT - 13.8 @ 103, Car and Driver - These cars run well box stock, and love to be beaten on the strip - see the other blog on our guy that's running twelves in one of these cars with bolt ons and slicks, and no gears.

  7. 71 Boss 351 - 13.9 @ 102, howstuffworks.com - The quickest early Mustang on the list.  Its solid-lifter 351 Cleveland outperformed all prior big-block stompers in stock form.

  8. 99-04 Mustang GT, 93 Cobra, 95 Cobra R, 69-70 Boss 429 - Motor Trend, MMFF, Car and Driver, and howstuffworks.com, respectively, pick these cars to run 14.0 @ 100, 103 for the Boss.  99-04 GT? An upset for sure.  Don't tell a Boss 429 owner that you'll run him in your stock 150k-mile 99 GT for "pinks".  He might get a little pissed - and he just might lose.

  9. 68-70 Cobra Jet Mustang - This is not a typo.  I've listed the Cobra Jet twice, here, because so much legend surrounds the Cobra Jet's quarter mile prowess.  I'd say this time that cobrajet.org is on the money when it lists a stock 4-speed 68 on polyglas tires running 14.25 @ 101.27.  The time I quoted earlier on this list from the Cobra Jet, in my opinion, is skewed.  You be the judge.  We may never know, as the all-stock cars tend to be trailer queens, and the ones tearing up the strips are far from stock.  There are a lot of "tall tales" about Cobra Jet cars, but they are true favorites of the die-hard drag racers and they have tons of potential.  One of the baddest Mustangs on the strip?  Sure.  The quickest from the factory, no.

  10. 87-93 5.0 HO Mustang - this was the hardest one to find a time from a reputable source.  You can't just Google 5.0 Mustang 1/4 mile times and expect any simblance of accurate stock times.  I remember an old Motor Trend showing one running 14.5 @ 94.  I'd say that's on the money.  These cars have gotten almost folk-lore status, with reports of stone-stock cars running in the twelves.  I've seen some quick ones, but never in the 12's on the stock tires, with no mods at all.  I'd say the norm is 13.8-14.9 depending on the driver.  I won't call this the quickest Mustang from the factory by a long shot.  I will, however, call it the most favorite for the drag strip, and the one with the most potential.

Honorable mention - Not on the list here by a long shot, but Car and Driver ran a 15.3 in a 07 V6 5-speed Mustang.  Old timers, that's only 4 tenths off the best times I found for the fabled Boss 302.....

There are so many variables that go into this though.  There was a 69 Mach 1 428 that ran a 12.81 @ 105 in this years pure stock drags so alot of it has to do with driver and other affecting variables. None the less I wouldn't turn any of them down with the exception of the 71 Boss 351...those cars never did appeal to me for some reason.

true, but although cars in the pure stock drags are technically stock, they are drag strip prepared, and tweaked to get the most out of the stock combo.  those cars are not in stock, as delivered from the factory, condition.

I know that if you put a set of 4.30's in a stock Mach 1 and run stickies so you can power shift it.... they will go 12.80@108.5 with a 1.85 60 foot. Launching hard = axle breaky.

The "fabled" BOSS 302 as you call it was NEVER intended to be a quarter mile car.  The heads and carb are huge for the displacement -- it has no lo end torque, and thus is a pig off the line.  But when wound up to 7500-8000 RPM, look out.  The BOSS was a screamer.  Of course, you can't do that in the 1/4, it's pure road race.

I'ave got a 69 BOSS 302 and an 86 Saleen.  The BOSS manhandles the Saleen on a road course -- except for the straight, where the BOSS runs out of gear.  But there's hope, a 5-speed will be in the BOSS soon.

Remember, it's all about perspective.  Most younger readers have never even seen a BOSS 302 let alone know what they were designed for...there's more to life than 1/6 of a minute in a straight line!

i'm sorry to hear you say that saleen's are tuner cars. you don't seem to be very well informed as saleen has manufacturer status and are far from tuner status. i guess we should ignore the fact that they are sold on the showroom floor of alot of FORD dealerships too.

and yet you contradicted yourself about the shelby gt's as a tuner car and then listed the shelby gt500's as the fastest for 07-09?

at least you were honest when you said you did the easiest thing and breezed through all of the stats.

How about LRS's times on completing thier orders? dead last in my book as i have the receipts to prove it.

Saleens are modified/built at Saleen, not Ford.  Including Saleens would mean you'd have to include Roush, Steeda, and countless other Mustangs modified/manufactured away from the production line at Ford.

The GT500, aside from the KR, is a Ford production Mustang built at ford.  Shelby GT's, GT-SC's and KR's are modified versions of Ford's production cars built at Shelby's facility.

Contact me directly concerning your order.  We pride ourselves on our order completion rate, and I would like to know specifically where we fell short in your case.  I will to my best to make it right.

Thanks, Scott

Sam, I agree that 1/4 mile times are only one measurement of performance, but we're talking quickest, here.  "Best handling" would certainly yield totally different results, but that's hard to measure, and subjective to the driver.  There's no doubting the performance and the historical significance of the Boss 302, for sure.

mikebna, maybe you should do a little research before you make yourself look like a fool.  This guy knows what he is talking about and is 100% accurate when he says the GT500 Shelby is built in Ford plants.  The Shelby GT is modified from a regular GT at the Shelby plant.  Same goes with Roush's, Steeda's, and Saleen's.  Why do you think these companies sell stock GT bumpers and wheels and tires as takeoff's?  DUHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Scott H, 1985 Mustangs were 210 HP, '86's were down to 200 because of the E6 heads, but the 87-93's 5.0 H.O. is 225HP as they were set up those years

Nice job on the list, Scott S.

I have done business with 5.0resto many times buying parts for my 1988 Mustang GT hatchback, the only thing I am dissappointed in is how the prices on the 87-93 Mustang headlights have skyrocketed lately

Isn't there a video out similar to a "Top Gear" episode that had the 03-04 Cobra ahead of the GT500 by a tenth?

Doesn't the '08 Mustang GT fall into the same category as the '05 - '07 models?  It seems like it should.

I dont trust motor trend one bit. they said the GT500 ran 13.1, 12.6 and sometihng else i forget. yet MM&FF ran a 12.3 bone stock. someone over at MT needs some real drivers. I really dont want to comment on the rest of the times. the only one of your 10 that i dont see sometihng wrong with is #8 and i ran a 13.9 bone stock in my GT.

i cant believe a boss 302 is not much faster the a V6 mustang, i think someone is wrong because i have road in one and unless they did the test on ice..the boss should be faster..ALOT faster..its faster than my 2003 Gt for sure. oh well

What about the '84 302 4-V HO's?My own is no longer stock but it seems to me that the foundation had to be pretty good. Why does this car fall into a literal "black hole"? No one ever talks about them and it's damn near impossible to find "year specific" parts for them! Why? My car is no longer stock by a LONG way, it's a solid street perfomer because that's the direction I wanted to go and I absolutely love it. Does anyone have a clue about why there is a "black hole"for this particular year?

the 83 and 84 5.0's didn't fall under the 10 quickest in stock form, but you are right, all 79-93 mustangs have tons of potential because of their light weight and huge aftermarket support.  the 83 and 84 cars were significant in the fact that they marked the return of the 4-barrell, and the first years of the 5-speed, but they were only rated ad 175 horsepower.  you don't specifically hear mention much about 84's, but when is the last time you heard any good tech on a 81 Cobra, or heard about the performance potential of a 79 Ghia??  good thing is, that we do offer a ton of replacement parts for your car, and your car can easily be upfitted with many stock 87-93 parts that can improve its performance for minimal cash outlay.

Wednesday January 28, 2009 several of us from the local Mustang and Ford club went over to Speed World just east of Orlando, FL. One of the guys was itching to try out his 1991 LX 5.0. We all marveled at the car when he bought it back in midsummer. It's a veritable time capsule. Very clean and very original. The only changes from stock are 3.55 gears, drag radial tires and MGW shifter. The car went 14.52 at about 95 MPH.

I know for a fact a 2001 Bullitt is quicker than a 2008 Bullitt.  In 2001 the Bullitt was quicker in the 1/4 mile than a Cobra.
