The quest for 12s

Share |

My goal:

Run 12s in the car with a little modification as possible. Leaving the car factory as possible.

My car:

2008 GT 5spd

Interior upgrade, side impact airbags, blah blah blah (pretty much fully loaded making her HEAVY)

Factory 3.55 gears

Mods: (dyno #s 303hp 322tq.... Big thnaks to GEARHEADS in Arlington TX!!)

SCT X3 tuner

Cold Air intake

Steeda CMCV delete plates

BMR lower control arms

Steeda Tri-Ax shifter

So we took the car to the Texas Motorplex in Ennis TX. I decided to run the car on my brothers Hoosier Quick Time slicks (26x9.50-16). Weather was pretty good for September in Texas. Low humidity and temps in the mid to upper 90s. Well I set out to get a 12 sec pass in the car as is and wow did I get close in this car. 13.0xx. Just enough to make you want to continue to hot lap the car... to bad the track was busy. The car ran consistent 13.0xx times. Listed below is some of the data off one of the better time slips. I am thinking with a little more seat time and some better slicks ( they were a little worn and spun off the line) 12s should be no problem. I will keep you all updated on my next outing to the track!

Run 1

R/T.........055

60'..........1.853

1/8.........8.311

¼...........13.045

Run 2

My buddy is running 12.70s with a very similar setup on his 05, plus exhaust, and on drag radials.  The key to him getting into the 12's was to launch it HARD.  He had a ton of 13.0X to 13.1X passes before he left hard enough to get into the 12's.

Thats pretty impressive for a "basically" stock GT. Those come with what about 300hp from the factory? so with the tuner and the cold air i am going to guess your pushing about 320-335hp? and your running consistent 13.0's. Thats pretty good, I have an 87 GT with stock suspension (thats the next upgrade) and stock size tires (already have 245/50's on order) and the best i was able to get was a 13.2. That is pretty slow considering i have a 400hp engine. My trap speed though was 108mph. If i was actually able to get some descent traction what do you think i should be able to run assuming i can get a good launch (like the one shown above). And for a rear-end upgrade what do you suggest??

Vito, one of the best parts I added were the control arms. They greatly reduced wheel hop (horrible on factory control arms for 05+ cars) and gave increased stability to the whole car. I would suggest you try a set of solid control arms, subframe connectors and a good set of Mickey Thompson drag radials or ET Street (cheater slicks). If you have the funds, also look into throwing those on a set of Weld Draglites. If you get serious about drag racing, you can always use a set of Eibach Drag Launch springs and set of shocks/struts.

Thanks J, i appreciate the info. I just finished putting on a set of shocks and springs from maximum motorsports. Used thier H&R sport springs with a matched set of Tokico shocks and struts, with new urethane spring isolators. Wow what a difference in handling. I haven't taken it to the track yet but looking forward to it. Don't have any drag radials yet but when the funds come around I want to get a set of the MM extreme duty rear lower control arms with the adjustable spring perch. then some drag radials. That should put me in the 12's!!!
