How do you dress up a white car?

Share |

I was the proud owner of a 89 GT that I put a lot of money into and take it to car shows and get-togethers as well as the track. LRS allowed the car to be included in their 2004 calander which eventually got me a 3 page photo shoot and article in a Magazine. It was an awesome experience and a car guy's dream come true! I loved the trips, the people that I met and also the attention that a pretty car brings. It was a custom paint with phantom flames, plus all the goodies that most of you probably have.

I sold the car and it's replacement is a 2003 Mach 1 which is WHITE. It is the rarest color for the 2003 Mach 1 and after owning it for 3 years I think I might know why. This is the first white car that I have owned and told my wife that I really missed the outings that we took the 89 to. She suggested that we make the Mach into a show car. I have looked in every magazine that I can get my hands on and there are literally NO white cars in the mags. What do I do? How do I accessorize my Mach? White calipers? White rims? What about the engine?I am installing a Vortech on it this weekend and that will be yet another item to "accent" however way I can.

The interior is the dark charcoal. The stripes are black and I have 03 Cobra satin rims on the car right now which I am happy with. I am lost and I am looking to you for help. Please send ideas or even pics of your white cars. I will keep you posted what I decide to do and include installtion pics and tips.

Carroll Shelby did it with Guardsman Blue stripes on the original GT 350s. A scheme he  "borrowed" from Briggs Cunningham's cars of the 1950s.

You're right about there being no white cars in magazines. Years ago there was a comment in a long forgotten article, in Hot Rod, I think. White cars just don't photograph well. I think they were referring to situations where they have little control over lighting and angles. The photo of you '03 Mach is the exception that illustrates the rule.

Thanks for the idea. I have done sutle changes such as..the black hood insert is no longer on the car (did you notice?) I have a white ford oval on the rear of the car that my wife got me. I have considered stripes and also a fade paint job into checkered flag... still drawing stuff out....  Thanks for the reply.

You can get your 03 Cobra wheels powdercoated white or a set of 99-04 Saleen's powdercoated in white (saleens look stunning on a Mach 1 btw) paint your calipers high gloss black. You want there to be contrast and not too much white or it will be overkill.

You can also get 03/04 Cobra mirrors and paint the folding parts white.

I'd leave the rest of the factory exterior Mach 1 specific parts on the car such as the wing, stripes, hood/shaker, front lip only because you dont want people to think the car is not a mach 1. Unless you do?

sounds good.... I like the ideas. I agree that I don't want too much white and I like the contrast of the black stripes and accents. I don't really care if people know that it IS a Mach 1 or not... I just don't want to concentrate on the fact that it is a Mach 1. I had actually thought of getting rid of the "shaker" system and hood and putting a different hood on the car to be easier to accent with paint if I wanted to. Still undecided... Thanks for the ideas...

You should paint the roof gloss black between the drip moulding.

Whatever you do, don't debadge it or shave the door handles or anything.

What if I painted the top gloss black from the top of the windshield to the back. It would look like a convertible with the top down. I have also thought of a two tone paint scheme. Thanks for the idea and I can assure I will leave the door handles on it.

I think the white looks great.  The number decals really do a good job of complimenting what you have.  I like the wheel color idea as mentioned earlier.  That would definitely make it pop.

i'd go with black 03 cobra rims and black calipers, the contrast between the white paint and black rims looks great and will accent the stripes, also you cold get black-out tail light covers and the black cover for the panel in between the taillights

I like the idea of the blackouts and the back panel. I was thinking about gloss black calipers with a white horse on them. I also like the looks of the Halibrand  Cobra III rims and the BIg bite drilled/slotted rotors. I am not totally sold on the white rims yet, but it is on the table...... Thanks for the comments..... check out the rims on the WHEEL PIT page. You can type in BIG BITE in the search area and pull up the rotors.

Autorama in Houston a few years ago....Saw a white Shelby Roadster that was white and had a white ghost image of a Cobra ready to strike on the hood....It was something you had to look carefully to see...but it was a knockout!
