Are the NMRA and Fun Ford Weekends Dead?

Share |

NMRA racer

While both the NMRA (National Mustang Racers Association) and Fun Ford Weekends still attract many racers and fans, it seems that the following for these type of events is slipping. It appears that fewer people are attending the races, which means fewer people are racing, showing or visiting the manufacturers midway. Sure gas prices are a factor, but is it the only one?

Because so many local tracks offer street night programs, maybe people don't really feel like getting together for an entire weekend in a big group for a national event. Having grown up in a "bowtie" household, the "Super Chevy Sunday's" look pale to the way they were 15-20 years ago also, so it seems like it is across the board. Where is the excitement??? The World Ford Challenge has changed to the World Street Challenge to generate a bigger event and to pit Ford vs Chevy vs Mopar vs Import (so the ad says). Maybe a grudge race mentality is the answer, you know, Good vs bad, Bowtie vs Blue Oval, big motor vs turbo, etc. Only time will tell.

So the question is, who is going? Are you going to the World Street Challenge? Are you going to the Fun Ford event or NMRA event coming near you? Or are you spending your money on a couple of "test and tune" nights at the local dragstrip, hanging with friends, and keeping it simple.

For more info on these events please visit www.funfordevents.com, www.nmraracing.com, and www.worldstreetchallenge.com.

I have not made it to a Fun Ford Weekend in about 2 years now. I remember going with family and friends; we would go twice a year most of the time, Ennis and Houston events.  The last time I went it did really seem dead around the events.  The vendors could be counted on one hand and they did not bring much more than a few tables worth of products to check out.  It left the only entertainment as watching the races.  Don't get me wrong, racing is fun but watching it all weekend is not something most people would like to do.  They need more vendor involvement and more entertainment outside racing to keep people there. car show and better swap meet.

I agree.I have atended FFW  in Atlanta for the past 7 years and it has died off. The vendors was the most exciting part. You could find great deals with no tax or shipping.Last year had only a few vendors in the past it had dozens. I went to the NMRA event this year and it felt uncelibrated but had damn good raceing.

With True Steet being $85 and you have to pay extra to get any test runs I will never go again. 2 or 3 years ago you could race true street for $40 and that was including all the test runs you wanted.

I believe that the regulators are killing the sport. For example the people from NMRA are just copying what other organizations are doping and not listening to what we, the racers have to say.

Example,

Can you believe that if you have a mustang or capri with a stick transmission (be it a Jerico or a G Force) you are not allowed to race in almost any of their classes?

For me this goes beyond comprehension.... it is stupid guys!

Close to 70 % of the mustangs out there came with an stick transmission!!!!

As an update to this blog, Fun Ford Weekends have ceased to exist due to financial reasons. The NMRA/NMCA are the only series left for the average guys to attend.
