2003 GT auto to five speed swap

Share |

Well ive had been driving my 03 GT for a while with the auto in it and started to have a few problems with shifting and the torque converter. On my way back form being out of town, i had to stop about 7 times due to the problems so i begane to look at a way to fix everything. I looked into a few other auto trans from PA  Perfromance but then i realized for the price i would almost spend the same doing an entire 5 -speed swap.

I called Prestige Mustang , a salvage style dealer out of Georgia, and they pretty much hooked me up with every part i needed to do the entire swap. This included a Tremec 3650, wiring harness, flywheel, shifter, bellhousing and a driveshaft yoke. The only things i had to buy were a clutch,  pilot bearing, throw-out bearing, and a clutch cable kit.

So this past weekend me and my buddy David swapped everything over and had it back on the ground sunday. I bought a SCT X-Cal 3 tuner (Our part number SCT-3015) to allow me to make the computer in the car orginally except the five speed swap. Mike Wilson at Dallas Mustang made the tune for me and emailed it over to us. After some technical difficulties with the tuner that the guys at SCT's tech support helped me figure out , i got the tune loaded up and the car runs and drives just like a stock five speed car.

Only one problem is the speedo is off which will probably require me to run a Speed Cal with a special ratio set up to correct it but that isnt a big deal. I now had a car i like to drive and probably will help with resale value later on down the road.

You should be able to fix the speedo with the XCAL3.  In the user controlled options change the gear ratio setting until you find the correct combination.

Well Rick , i thought the XCAL 3 would do the job but unfortunatley the tuner will only adjust for rear end gear changes ....not a trans swap. I even tried different gear settings just to offset it a little but got no where.

I eneded up getting a SpeedCal 2 which is a product we sell here to correct for gear changes and just about anything really. I called up Mike Wilson at DM and he figured the calibration for the speedcal and now the speedo is right on.

As far as the products I bought here at work, heres a little list:

03-04 Cobra Clutch From Ford Racing

BBK Adjustable Cable kit

SCT XCAL 3

Royal Purple Synchromax Trans Fluid

Shift boot and bezel

and that is it a weekend in a shop and i had a five speed on monday.

About jmartin

Been working on Mustangs since I was 16, love every shape and form they come in. Ive owned all kinds of Mustangs from a Blown 90 GT up to a Road Race 2010 GT and just recently picked up a 2011 Mustang V6 to work some magic on.
