LRS now owns a piece of Latemodel Mustang History!

It's the 1989 Mustang Dominator GTA!

It's a car that JBA built brand-new in 1989 for a high-speed challenge for Road & Track magazine.  The car competed against high-end exotics as well as Gottlieb's famous "big red" 1969 Camaro and other factory built concept/tuner cars. The JBA dominator Mustang ran 173 miles per hour after being built in just 3 weeks.  The body work is hand-made from sheetmetal, not fiberglass.

The Dominator's original powerplant was a 320-inch small block with yates heads and a carburetor.  it now has a 351w similar to the 95 Cobra R with a 6-speed, and a super-coupe independant rear suspension.  The car was given to JBA by Ford.  The mounds of documentation for the car include a letter from Road and Track to Ford recommending the passage of the car to JBA, saying that the car would be used for development of such technology as "modular engines, superchargers, and independant rear suspension".  Remember, this was 1989 - long before this technology actually made it to new Mustangs.

JBA wasn't an exhaust manufacturer then, they were a performance and mail order shop, much like ours, that specialized in Ford and Mustang performance during the 5.0's infancy.  The car was given to them because of their standing in the industry at the time.  If you were around Mustangs in the early 90's you'll know that this is when the 5.0 started its reign on the streets, and you'll remember all of the articles on this very car.  There were many.  It's one of the most publicized 5.0 mustangs in history.

....and now belongs to Latemodel Restoration Supply - leader in 5.0 restoration.

funny how things turn out....

check it out when you have a chance.  it's a piece of 5.0 history

Yes, I remember seeing the car, as I was working in Southern California at the time. But my intrests were foucused on Saleens at that time.. Much of the Body modifications look like the Rousch Pace car that Jack built.

Yeah I had (may still have) all of those mags. I dearly remember that car. Also there was one Mustang (w/Saleen body kit) in the BTC Series, I loved them both.

I looked through my collection of car mags and sure enough I have the Super Ford mag. It is volume 16, number 2 of June 1991.  For being a race car it had AC, PS, and power brakes.  It was and still is a great looking car. I'm sure a lot of people  would like to own it including myself.  Well its in good hands now.  Thanks for the memories

Do I remember it?  Are you kidding?  The dream of owning a "Five-Oh" spurred me thru college.  Upon graduating I bought a brand new '86 GT... which I still own.  Yes, it has seen its share of mods, but I've been slowly restoring it with help from LRS.  I watched the second coming of the domestic muscle car back in the '80s, all the while reading every tidbit I could find on late model Mustangs.  The JBA Dominator was a big deal - it was a hairy beast built on an underdog chassis and it carried the Pony flag proudly.  Yeah, fun days those were.  Fun days, indeed!

Oh yeah I remember that one. I kept thinking, "How can I build one...". I figured I could start with a Capri because of the bubble rear window and then go nuts from there. Back then I would have dragged sensitive parts of my body over two miles of crushed glass just to hear someone drain the oil out of that thing into a tin cup over the phone... OK, Now I'd probably just drag parts over a few feet of crushed glass, but the feeling is still the same. I'm gonna have to come by and see that bad boy the next time I am in the area.

Do I remember it? So much so that I miss it far more than I thought I would. Owning it for the past 5 years was a blast, but I am proud to have it in the right hands today. Looks great in the showroom guys!

About btaylor

Been around cars and the car culture my whole life. Built up a 1957 Chevy truck for my first vehicle when I was 14, with a straight 6, split mainfold and 3 one barrel carbs. (It sounded like an angry Cessna!). I have owned a 1997 Camaro, a few trucks, fixed up a wrecked 1995 Mustang convertible and currently drive a 1997 Supercharged Regal GS and the wife drives a 2007 Suburban LTZ. I have a 11 year old girl and an 8 year old girl and a 2 year old girl! I love to play Little Big Planet, Madden football and Singstar on my PS3, golf and just about all sports. Go Mavs, Stars, Rangers and Cowboys!!!
