It seems that most everyone at LRS considers me to be one of the "go to guys" for answers to the infinite number of tech questions that exist (why I don't know, but thats a whole other blog post).  While it is our awesome sales team that I normally deal with, these queries are originating from you, the customer.  From 8-5 Monday thru Friday we are at your beck & call, but what if you have a question after hours?  What I would like to do is put together a technical FAQ.  While I already have a good list going, I would like to hear from you, the customer.  What type of information would you like to see?  What questions do you have?

While we're here, let’s take care of one that seems to be popping up quite a bit here lately. Since we added the SCT-3015 X3 to our product line the burning question after purchase is, "How do I install it?”  "There is no instruction manual!” is the cry over the phone or the text in the email.  The answer is most often met with skepticism, but really is as simple as it sounds.  Plug the X3 in to your data link connector & follow the prompts on the screen.  That’s it.  No black magic, no voodoo, no witch doctors.  To delve a little deeper, sometimes this question is paired with, "What is a Data Link Connector & where is it?”  On all 96-present motor vehicles, the Data Link Connector (often referred to as the DLC) is the port that connects external tools to the vehicles Powertrain Control Module or PCM.  All diagnostics, PCM flashing, & data logging is done through this port.  As far as location goes, it varies from vehicle to vehicle, but it is Federally mandated that it must be easily accessible from the driver’s seat.  For instance, on a 05-up Mustang the DLC is located just on the under edge of the dash right below the headlight switch.  On a 96-04 Mustang the DLC is located on the back edge of the center console, just where the console meets the dash.

Hopefully this helps, & please leave some comments on other information that you would like to see.  The best part is, it will be available 24-7 (so long as you can connect to the internet!) to fit your lifestyle.

Guy,

If we are talking about a 5.0L, then yes.  We have  both 130 amp & 200 amp versions as well & they are available in several different powdercoat colors.

Richard,

Providing your truck was originally equipped with composite headlights, you'll need a CTP-8200BK, CTP-8191K, & a CTP-8224C.

I would like to see a couple of tech articles on the following:

1.  Installation of a 4 lug disc break set-up to replace the drum breaks on a Fox Mustang.  Some of us still like the 4 lug pony rims, but would like to have the increase performance of disc breaks on the rear.

2.  The proper and correct way to clean and detail an engine bay of any late model Mustang.

3.  The correct way to paint or dye interior parts.

Basically, anything you want to write as a technical article would be helpful to the Mustang late model hobby.

Thanks!

Hey, I got a repro LX front bumper for my '89, emailed tech, but no response!  What do I need to prep this for paint??? Scuff, clean and prime?? use adhesion promoter???  Also where's my freakin catalog, dude??

Thanks in advance, Josh

Tim,

Thanks for the great ideas!  I'll add these in & see what we can do.

Josh,

The LX covers already have a primer on them, but some prep is still needed.

1. Wash thoroughly with dish soap & warm water.

Thoroughly rinse.

2. Wet sand the entire surface to be painted with 400 grit sandpaper.

Thoroughly rinse.

3. Wipe down the entire surface to be painted with DuPont Prep-Sol or equivalent.

Allow to dry.

4. Wipe down the entire surface to be painted with a tac cloth.

While a quality sealer is recommended, it is not needed.  Same goes for adhesion promoter.  Whomever is supplying you with your materials is the one that can tell you what will work the best.  As far as catalogs go, we are currently working on the latest, greatest edition of the LRS catalog to date.  I'm not real sure of the exact release date but keep an eye on the website.  Also, until we do get a catalog in you hands, please use the website.  It has far more parts listed than we could ever fit in a catalog.

I have a 90 Mustang LX and I am having issues with the passenger side electric window not operating correctly.  For about the last 6 months the window would roll down, but sometimes  would not roll up and if I kept pressing the up/down button the window would finally go up. I rolled the window down last week and now it will not go up.  By the way both driver side and passenger side switches will not bring it up. Do you have any suggestions?

I have an 88 GT and 91 GT and I would like to change both to Cobra R brakes or the equivalant. Can you tell me the ins and outs of fitting 95 Cobra R  17x 9 wheels on each. ..... What size tires should be used and can you use bigger tires on back? Will there be clearance issues and how can you fix them. Can you tell me about changing the speedo gear to match up with the new combo with 3:73 gears?

I just ordered a new switch bezel for my 1994 Mustang Convertible (PN LRS14527B).  I removed the old one and installed the switches in the new part.  I carefully installed it on the door panel, and it looked great.  The first time I shut the door, the tang broke off the bezel (the gizmo that has the metal clip installed and is at the lower rear of the bezel).  I looked at the part carefully, and it would appear that the tang is a very weak point in this assembly.  I even tried to epoxy it back in place, but this didn't hold either.  What do I need to do about this?  Do I just suck it up and order yet another one, or what?  Thanks,

Bill

We have a list going here!

Mark,

Verify that you have voltage & ground at the motor connector.  If you do then verify that the motor is good by applying positive & negative to the motor directly from the battery.  Apply positive o one terminal & neagative to the othe & then swap to make sure the motor is working in both directions.  If you do not have voltage or ground present then you will need to trace back trought the system to find where the open is.  Typically it is at a connector or in the door jamb.

Don,

Unfortunately Ford has discontinued the clocksprings & there are no aftermarket replacements on the horizon.  If a search at your local salveage yards turns up nothing, check with the guys over at www.prestigemustang.com.

Robert,

The 88 has smaller front fender wheel openings, so there will be rubbing no matter what.  You will need LRS-3504HDW rack limiters to keep the wheels from hitting the control arm when turning.  I would suggest a 255/40/17 in the front & a 275/40/17 in the rear.  The rear quad-shock will likely need to be removed.  For the speedo, all you need is a new driven gear.  Use a 21 tooth for the 88 & a 23 tooth for the 91, for the factory transmissions.

William,

Our sales reps also lead a double life as customer service reps.  Please call in & allow one of them to get you squared away.

Greg,

Theoretically, the fuel mileage should not go down.  What else has changed?  Have you started using a different brand of fuel or buying from a different station?

I have an 88 lx hatch that i'm about to install eibach pro-kit springs on. The car will also have caster/camber plates, and i have ordered a Steeda bump steer kit for the car as well. I was wondering if i need offset rack bushings in conjunction with the bumpsteer kit. I think the drop on the springs is 1.25 inches up front. Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi I have an 89 mustang and broke off some bolts as I was replacing the water pump. Its not leaking but I want to make it right. What should I do to get these bolts out of the block? Thanks, Tim

jmac said:

Bill,

The bumpsteer kit will more than take care of your tie rod alignment., Offset rack bushings will not be needed.

Tim,

You will need to remove the timing cover.  Hopefully there is enough bolt sticking out that you can work it loose with vice-grips.  If not you will need to drill out the broken peieces & use an easy out to remove them.  Before you put it back together chase the threads in the block with a tap & use anti-sieze on the replacement bolts.

It sounds like your alternator isn't on it's game.  Have you checked to see what it's output is?  Are you running underdrive pullies?

I have a couple of questions for Jmac or anyone who can help answer my questions

Do you know if I would be able to run Ford Racing's E303 camshaft with a stock set of heads on a 93 gt, if so are my heads going to meet the flow of that cam? Is the lift of that cam to much for my stock valve springs?

I was also wondering when I first start up my car when it hasnt been started in a couple days it starts and then runs for a few seconds and dies, and it will stay running if you stay on the throttle, keep in mind its fuel injected, but once the motor has ran for a little while it starts up fine and idles fine. Do you know what could lead to this problem? I was thinking possibly a fuel pressure problem but I'm not for sure.

I have a 08 mustang gt and was thinking of cutting out the h-pipe and installing a x-pipe from pipes the one where you leave the stock cats in. Is this a waste of time and money or will it add sound and some HP?

HEY YOU GUYS ARE GREAT ! MY QUESTION IS WHEN USING M6582D302 VALVE COVERS  WHEN INSTALLING ROLLER ROCKERS  (M6564A50 ) WHAT TYPE OF CLEARANCING IS REQUIRED ?  I WAS GIVEN THESE FOR CHRISTMAS AND WANT TO KEEP USING THESE COVERS WHEN I ORDER THESE ROCKERS.  THANKS

Adam,

With aftermarket headers you are forced to do some bending & trimming.  With a little tweaking & grinding about a 1/16" off of the tube mounting flange where it is closest to the header, you can install it using the bolt supplied with the header.

Carlos,

We have a full line of exhaust, cold air kits, & tuners to increase the performance of your truck.

Kyle,

The easiest way to check your charging/starting system is to run by Autozone & they will test it for free.

Eric,

It sound like you've had some sort of catastophic failure.  You need to visit a reputable shop to have it diagnosed properly, or plan on a new transmision.

Adidas,

18x9 will fit if you are not lowered more than .75", run a couple of rack limiter, & go no wider than a 255 in the front & a 275 in the rear.

bigpozz,

The E303 will offer an improvement, but my advice is to always check piston to valve clearance & when using stock heads it is highly recommended to upgrade valve springs.   For the cold start issue, it almost sounds like you have a sticking/slow idle motor.

greg,

I did this on my car.  Sound will be changed, but because the stock cats are left in place, there is no power improvement.

BUTCH,

Typically, the area around the baffle in the passenger side valve cover is the only area that needs clearancing.
