I would say the '89 Saleen SA-5 would be the rarest of all fox body mustangs. It was a prototype built before the SSC cars. Black with tan interior, it's 1 of 1.

i know of one rare t-top and i owned it as my first mustang,  but money talks,  so its no longer mine,  an 81 t-top 331ci with a c-4 auto from the dealer,  special built to sell. and i never took a pic and i am kicking my self now.  it was white with red interior,  c-4 auto

How about the 1981 Mclaren M81 Mustangs, surely they must be the rarest fox bodies?

Man, there is all kind of rare foxes coming out of the woodwork.  Some of these I never new existed.  Gives me some more things to research now.

About 10 years ago I worked at a tire shop and a guy brough in a '86 LX 5.0L HATCH. It didnt have the GT side moldings no fog lights and a stanard Lx interior. he bought the car new and thats the way it left the factory. Any one else ever see one?

I own a 1985 Mustang LX 5.0 Coupe (P26M)original paint (Dark Sable) 1 of only 55 produced for that year. Fully loaded, auto, with the EFI 5.0.  It's the only one I have ever seen!

One of my dad's friend informed me that he had come across a 1989 Saleen....I about lost my breath. He had picked it up from a Vietnamese guy who had it sitting in his garage for about 6 years, untouched. The car had 82,000 original miles and my friend paid 4,000 for it. It's now worth about 18,000.

The predator mustangs was pretty rare.I own one.They were only produced for 3 years and not many made. The company that made them was soloman america.

im another big 93 cobra fan and i was reading through alot of mustang books and magizines trying to learn as much as i could about this awsome model mustang. but i have learned that there was a rare cobra R model that i didnt know was built in 93 i thought it was 94,95 and later that it was built  but i guess it is pretty rare and i seen one for sale and it was going for about 45 to 50 grand. also the 93 cobra was kinda rare to they say there was only like 500 models built i dont know how true that is.

My brother is working on buying a 35k mile Orange 83 GT 5.0 5speed convertible - one of 44 if I understand correctly - has anyone seen one of those?  Its a one owner rust free car - been in a barn for 13 years.  Needs motor and interior.

While you may be able to make the 17x10 fit in the front, the returns would be very diminishing.  You would have to flare the fenders to a large extent & your turning radius would be increased greatly.  I personally run 17x9 with 275's in the front of my 93 & that is about the widest useful combination I would suggest.  Plus, when that 275 is an R compound, you won't be left wanting for more, I guarantee it!

Rare Mustangs huh!!! I have some info to clear things up a little. There were only 107 cobra R's made in 1993 and only in 93 on a fox body. The cobra R then came back in the year 2000. In 1990 Ford, NCAA, and 7-Up bottling company came up with the "7-Up" mustang. 4,106 emerald green convertibles for this particular "rare mustang" was produced. Next in line we have the 1992 1/2 limited edition also known as a "summer special". Once again an LX convertible painted red, white leather interior and white pony wheels and a white convertible top complete with rear spoiler instead of that ugly luggage rack. Ford produced 2,019 according to muscle mustangs and fast fords magazine. Then to my personal favorite because i was an owner of one is the 1993 summer special edition convertibles. In 93 there were 2 types made. there was a "chrome yellow" model made wich had yellow paint, black leather interior, black convertible top and chrome pony wheels complete with rear spoiler and the 5.0 V8. Ford only produced 1,503 chrome yellow mustangs. And lastly they in Feb. 1993 they decided to build what they called the "triple white" or also known as "Vibrant white" mustang. White paint, white convertible top, White leather interior, white pony wheels, complete with rear spoiler and 5.0 V8. Ford only produce 1,500 of these in 1993. I was lucky enough to own one until some jack#!s hit me doing 40mph and totalled it, That guy was lucky i was unconciouse. Anyway that is what i know about the "rare" fox body mustangs. I still have pictures of my Triple white stang to help me remember what i had. hope this helped.

I have a 1985.5 svo thats a rare one

I know they made a lot of 79s, but the Pace Cars and Cobras had the lowest production numbers. I have a 79 Ghia 302, they made around 30k, but I think the real question is how many are left and drivable. My Dad also has an 83 GLX 5L Convet. I know they made a few GT Converts. And they made a lot of GLX Converts, but most of those were the 6 banger, so again its a question of numbers now, compaired to back in the day.

I have some guy at work trying to tell me that he used to own a 89 GT Cobra mustang...he then goes on to tell me that it had a 351w from the factory.  He also told me that I wouldn't find anything on the net because it was soo rare that no one knew about it.  Can someone give me some info so I can tell this guy that he is full of Shi%.

I own 30 fox bodies now and all of the Gt's say GT/Cobra on the title even though they are not true Cobra's. I have never heard of any of the Gt's especially 89's coming from the factory with a 351W.

Yes anybody that owns a T-Top should be proud and carefull as sh!% when driving. i don't know the production #'s on them but i do know they are rare. I too rarely ever see one with t-tops, i can't even remember the last time i saw one. Hang on to that one as long as you can bro.

I am not sure what your LX T-Top is worth but if you really want to know a good resource would be "CPI Guide". (Cars of Particular Interest Guide) get in touch with them and they should be able to help you. Or you can purchase one of their little books. I need to buy one of their little books again myself. I see everyone talking about the 86 LX 5.0 Hatch with t-tops. I have an 86 GT 5.0 hatch with t-tops. Is that as rare as the 86 LX?

I wouldn't say you're stupid at all. I call it an investment. Everyone I talk to who knows anything about the fox bodies says that they are going up in value and that clean ones are increasingly harder to find. I think the t-top models will just go up, up, up in value. Mine is the only one I have ever seen locally where I live. I have also tried to find production numbers for the t-top cars, but no luck.

I have a rare 1988 t-top LX 5.0.  I have been told only 500 were made.   Not sure, but everytime i go to a new shop people notice it.   It was built in September 1987, and classified as a 1988.  I have been told it is the last T-tops to hit the assembly line... can anyone confirm this?????

i wish i could find out how many 87 and 88 t-tops were made.. i own an 87 GT t-top, wierd part about it is it was produced in june '87 and still classified as an 87. i always though by june production, it wouldve been an '88. around here (houston tx) i still will see a few 4 eye t-tops running around, but have only seen 2 others in the last 6 years around here.. anyone have a clue where you can find prodution #'s on them.. probably impossible since they were built as hatchbacks and sent to become t-tops

A while back someone asked about the 5.0 t-top Capri. I own an '86 RS t-top which, according to information I have found, is one of 282 built. Not ultra rare, but certainly one of the rarest standard production foxes. Unfortunately, I dont have specific 5.0 t-top production numbers for any other years, but in 85-86, t-tops accounted for 7%-7.5% of production across the full Capri range. I would think it's a safe guess that Mustang t-top production in those years would follow these percentages fairly closely. I read somewhere that two door fox body Granadas are some of the rarest foxes around, although they were seriously ugly, so I doubt this will make them collectable.

Reguarding that '89 GT "Cobra". All Mustang GTs built for Canada from '85 to '90 (not 100% sure on the years, but I think this is right) had Cobra decals on the back of them. The Factory 351 story is likely complete B.S. To the best of my knowledge, there is still no EFI 351 intake that will allow the tall deck Windsor to clear a stock fox Mustang hood, and the only EFI 351 intake manifold Ford had in 1989 was the truck piece which is completely incompatable with the Mustang throttle body position. The only Ford built 351 powered Mustang (not counting Saleens and the like) produced since 1973 that I know of is the '95 Cobra R.

Your comment on oxford white is wrong I own a 84 predator GT302 with original paint and also verified by Tom Soloman him self remembers this extremely rare car he built with special request's to build and it was painted Oxford White.

My comment about the Oxford white was pertaining to the SVO's only. There were several oxford white cars built just only 1    84 SVO  in that color.

how about a 1989 almond hatchback. Only 236 were produced in this color (6V) and only 500 combined coupes/hatches ever produced (LX only).  I have one so i figured i'd represent.  they were all automatics, had every factory option including a sunroof. lol.

hey guys, sorry but I refuse to believe T-top hatchbacks are rare.  When I look through local classifieds or eBay, it seems like half the cars I see are T-top ones.  For some reason, I see a lot of 1988 T-top GT's, even though people claim they are so rare.  But I know in general, Ford sold a lot of Mustangs in 1988, so '88's in general are not too rare either, unless they are an uncommon color like the almond '89 mentioned above.  The only T-tops that are really rare are notchbacks.

Definitely no such thing as a factory 5.8L Fox Mustang.  

Also for people who own Canadian 87-93 GT's, sorry but your cars are NOT COBRA'S!!!! I am sick of seeing people claim their 1988 or 91 Mustang is a Cobra.

Aaron, a GT-40 lower manifold from a Lightning or 351 crate motor sold back in those days will work with a Cobra upper, GT40 Tubular upper, or Explorer upper, so yes you can use the Mustang style fuel injection (throttle body) on a 351.  Edelbrock and Trickflow also make aftermarket EFI manifolds for this.

   Sounds like you know what your talking about, but didn't the famed '93 mustang cobra R come with a 5.8??? I am not sure thats why i am asking. I know for a fact that the '93 cobra R came with a regular stock fox hood, but what was it that made it so special from the regular cobras of that year? what made it a "Cobra R"?? aside from the obviouse suspension and brake upgrades. i was under the impression that it was because it came with a 5.8L. But Like you said the deck height is too tall to fit under the stock hood of a regular fox. So did it have a bored and stroked 302?? Or did they use "dropped engine mounts"?? I would like to know, being a huge mustang enthusiast and an '87 GT owner myself i like to stay up on Fox Facts.

I just recently became a first time Mustang owner when I bought my best friend's '84GT T-top hatchback. What's funny about this particular car is that i can't find a picture of another car exactly like mine. For example;my car does not hav fog lights,yet every picture of an '84 GT I find it has fog lights below the bumper.There are a couple of other things that seem to be "different" about this car, at first I thought it might be a V-8 conv. but after checking it out it's not,the V-8 is org.. Regardless of how many Ford may have produced,I have only seen one other '84 GT and it's not a T-top.I love this  car and haven't batted an eye at replacing the whole drive train with hi-po parts from Ford Racing,Eibach, MSD,and Eldelbrock.The body is beautiful and under the car is clean!I plan on putting this thing on the street for manny more miles!

93 cobra r came with with a 302 not a 351.95 cobra r came with a 351 in it.THe car came in only white.my boss bought the original 93 cobra r concept car.it didn't have a motor or trans.he called ford up and they sent him the orignal motor and trans.it only had 19 miles on it.

the 93 cobra r didnt come with a radio or air cond.,or sound deading material.it also came with 96 v-6 wheel that were painted black with a chrome center cap

I have an 85 hatch 5speed black picked it up from florida 3 years ago,It says twister on the bottom ,And has a small plate by the glove box that also shows this .Also says 0016b. It also has 5.8 on the fender not 5.0 any feed back on this .I picked it up with 31430.0 miles When i took it to a ford dealer in canada the guys lost there minds .302 with 351 heads holly 4 This car also has a 4 disk brake set up.They all wanted to call up a guy who owns a 67 shelby. There are apparently a number of rare foxes out there.  My 89 Saleen qualifies.

Unit # 89-704 is a Tropical Yellow convertible (taupe colored top).  It is 1 of 3 Saleen convertibles produced in that color, and the only one that came equipped a with 3:55 rear gear (according to Liz Saleen).  Mustangs this color were produced by Ford in 88 and 89 only (in 88 it was called Mimosa Yellow-different name, same color and paint code). This was not a very popular color in either production year, thus to see a Fox of this color is quite uncommon.  I've seen maybe 10 or twenty over the years. Most of those were 4-banger notches and convertibles.

Tropical yellow is a rare color I have had one with tan interior.  There is a local guy here that has one that is a origional 5.0 5spd car. It's the only one I've ever seen.

The oxford white SVO is rare, but so is the 84 Cadet Blue SVO that was built for a Ford Executive. It is an absolutely beautiful color, I've seen it in person, belongs to a friend of mine. I just purchased an all original, 88' Triple white GT convertible with an automatic trans and air. The car has 45,000 original miles on it. I was told the triple white convertibles of that year had low production numbers and can't find how many were produced. Can anyone tell me?

It's sad we can't find the production numbers for the T-Tops. Mine is a black 86 LX hatchback 5.0, 5-speed with T-Tops that I ordered back in Feb. 1986. There are some T-Tops around NW Ohio, mostly 87-88 GT's.

about 9 years ago,, i was about 19-20, and i had a nice 90 lx,, a nice built up 302 with TFS heads F-cam, performer rpm INJ intake,, 373s,   real fun car.. A few of my buddies had nice stangs as well,, but one of my buddies who WAS NOT a car guy, and had no interest or money towards hotrodding, needed a Cheap Beater,, he was spending $500,, one day i go by his house cause he paged me,, (we had pagers in 1999), lol,,   i show up and he has this MINT MINT,, 84 mustang Notch, it was a four cyl auto with wire wheels,, really not an attractive car, but it wasnt an LX,, it was just an "L" notchback,,  it was white with a Maroon Vinyl roof and Red PLAID interior,,, we thought nothing of it back then cause it was an ugly little car with about 90 horsepower, lol, but now that im about to get back in to mustangs again for the first time in 8 years,and about to start a winter 351 build,, i kinda wish mikey still had that "L" coupe sittin in his driveway cause to this day i have yet to see another one,,, im hoping to find a mid 80s clean body,, or if i really get lucky id like to find a capri cause my uncle had a black 84 when i was a kid, and i thought it was the balls,,   if anyone has any info on that "L" car feel free to hit me up,, ive seen and driven almost every foxbody stang, and like most can tell the year just by looking at it, i could pick an 89 out of a  Group of 87-93s, but still havnt seen another Vinyl roofed Mustang "L" coupe

There aren't a whole lot of tropical yellow cars out there.  I've owned one in the past and there is a guy up here that has one as well.  They were both 4 cylinder cars that were converted but there were a few factory V8 cars as well.

2 years ago I had the chance to get an 86 SVO 1 of 69 Dark shadow Blue ones code 7B. Turned into a whole "domestic" thing so I ended up passing. 1,900 bucks. I still regret it.

I have an 88 LX coupe car. It has a 5.0 H.O., 5 speed tranny, limited slip 4 shock rear axle, and it was ordered WITHOUT a/c. Its white with a red interior. It has power mirrors, manual windows. I was told it was 1 of 13. I found an 85 v6 convertable. Not sure, but I think it would be rare.

Ok so i just did a little resarch myself and i think i found a pritty rare car that my brother has his hands on... My brother living up here( in alaska) with my has the 1983 GLX Convertible

A further brakedown of Mustangs in 1983:

64,234 were hatchbacks and 33,201 were coupes. There were a total of 23,438 GLX and GT Convertibles. After subtracting the 1001 GT Convertibles, 22,437 GLX's remained. Out of those, 5,368 were the optional GLX 5.0 Convertibles. This leaves 17,069 GLX V6 Convertibles out there.
