I, along with a couple of fellow co-workers, had the privilege of attending the SVTOA Open Track Event this weekend. The event was held at the Hallett Motor Racing Circuit
just outside Tulsa Ok. This turned out to be a really exciting weekend
for us. Weather was great, a cold front blew in so it was a comfortable
mid 70's temp with sunshine and a slight breeze. Normally hot weather
makes events like these not as enjoyable but it was a refreshing
addition to the whole experience.
Saturday was the first day of the event. We had quite a variety of cars
turn up for the event. We had everything from AC Cobra replicas, to
Lightning’s and the SVT Focus running around the track. The event is
set up for the driving enthusiast to enjoy their cars and find out what
exactly they can do in a safe environment. They have driving
instructors there to help drivers enhance their skills and cut down
their lap times. It's not all about power. There have been several
times where 4 cylinder lightweight cars were turning fatter times than
the higher horsepower heavier cars. Either way it is a blast to run
around the track. We had quite a few sessions we were able to run and
it wasn't over crowded so there was plenty of track time for everyone.
Elapsed times got faster throughout the day as everyone was
familiarizing themselves with the track layout.
Sunday. Just when you think you have things figured out they throw a
new scenario at you. The second day was going to be more challenging.
We were on the same track but running the opposite direction. I know
this doesn't sound like a big deal but believe me it's like being on a
totally different track. The entry and exit points were totally
different and the elevation changes were more apparent. I have run that
track numerous times before but this was the first chance I got to run
it backwards. The times were a little slower running this way but I
believe the consensus was that most people preferred running it the
opposite direction. I've included some information about the club and
track that we were at. I would highly recommend attending a open track
event. It is a truly unique experience that will not only give you a
great adrenaline rush but make you a better driver even on the street.
